Summary:
Paul asks the Thessalonian believers to acknowledge and appreciate those who labor among them, lead them in the Lord, and give them instruction. Because of their work, the believers are to esteem them highly in love and live in peace with one another.
He also urges the believers to care for one another in practical ways. They are to admonish those who are unruly, encourage those who are discouraged, help those who are weak, and show patience toward everyone. The passage portrays a community marked by respect for its spiritual leaders, peace among its members, mutual care, and patient concern for the needs of others.
Teaching:
The labor, leadership, and exhortation Paul mentions are fundamentally the work of teaching God's Word. The labor is not merely any kind of effort, but the dedication and sacrifice involved in instructing God's holy people in the faith. Likewise, the work of leading and admonishing is guiding believers and encouraging them to live by faith in their daily lives. Taken together, these responsibilities center on the ministry of teaching and applying the Word of God.
The heart of church life is learning God's Word, and the central task of the church is proclaiming and teaching it.
We often emphasize winning people in the church. The key message of this brief passage is that believers should honor those who teach the Word and diligently learn from it. Through the Word, people are won, peace and harmony are cultivated among believers, and the church becomes God's family - a family in which we bear an unlimited responsibility for one another.
