2 Direction Beverage Antenna
Two Direction Beverage Antenna System using twisted pair wire, 300 ohm Ladderline, or surplus Military WD-1A Field Wire Radioware and KD9SV have announced a new simplified Beverage antenna system kit. The kit includes an optimized feed and reflection transformers and can be used with either a custom manufactured “Twisted Pair Wire,” 300 Ohm ladder line available from Radioware or Military surplus WD1 or WD-1A Field Telephone Wire. Conceptually, the design is similar to other two wire designs using “ladder line” but is greatly simplified for ease of use and installation. This antenna is great for those who can only install receiving antennas during the winter season. In the spring, the antenna can be wound up on a hose reel for re-installation come fall. It is also robust enough for a permanent installation. This new design also offers the ultimate in installation simplicity while providing excellent front-to-back ratios and the advantage of receiving from two directions from one simple antenna. The Feed Transformer and Reflection Transformer are designed with bi-filar windings for extremely good balance utilizing the popular binocular type ferrite cores and optimized impedance matching. The transformers are also encapsulated with polyurethane and plastic box for complete weather protection.

Twisted Pair shown in above diagram can be 300 ohm Ladder Line, Twisted Pair Wire, or WD1 Twin Lead Zip Cord, dependent upon selection of Feed and Reflection Transformers. See ordering below. Schematic from NCJ.
Installation is simple and easy. Two feed lines go from the feed point transformer at the near end for direction selection thereby eliminating the need for relays to change directions. At the far end, the wires are connected to the reflection transformer. For best operation, the unused direction should be terminated with a 75 ohm resistor and this can be easily done at your antenna selection box.
Recommended Beverage Antenna Lengths
W1WCR | ON4UN | W8WWV |
290 ft | 286 ft | 335 ft |
581 ft | 563 ft | 710 ft |
887 ft | 853 ft | 990 ft |
1183 ft | 1122 ft | 1225 ft |
The above lengths are optimized for best Front-to-Back at optimum incoming wave angles for most DX conditions.*

NOTE: A pair of Reversible Beverages (two antennas) will cover all four prime directions in a smaller footprint then four single wire antennas. |
The custom manufactured twisted pair wire can be ordered cut to length to fit your particular installation. Electrical connections are weatherproof binding posts for the wires and ground and F female coax connectors for the feed lines. This system is optimized for 75 ohm RG6 as it is inexpensive and easy-to-work-with. Basic installation instructions and technical directions are provided.
