[Introduction]
What should we learn from Job?
[In Relation to God]
1. Acknowledge God’s
sovereignty [lordship]
Job 23:13-14 "But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? He does whatever he
pleases. He carries out his decree against me, and many such plans he still has
in store.
Romans But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?
"Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like
this?' " Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for
noble purposes and some for common use?
<Right concept of possession>
Job 1:21 and said: "Naked I
came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD
has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised."
Job 2:10 He replied, "You
are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we
accept good from God, and not trouble?" In all this, Job did not sin in
what he said
2. Serve God with pure
motives
Job 1:9 "Does
Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied.
We should not use God for our own interests.
We must give ourselves for God’s purposes.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the
matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
3. Seek perfection [integrity]
Job 2:3 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered
my servant Job? There is no one on earth like
him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he
still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him
without any reason."
Job 27:5 I will never admit you are in the right; till I die, I
will not deny my integrity.
Matthew 5:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is
perfect
But be careful of
self-righteousness.
Our perfection is aimed to reveal God’s
beauty and glory.
Romans 10:3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes
from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's
righteousness.
[In Relation to Suffering]
Psalm 34:19 A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD
delivers him from them all;
1Peter 2:21 To
this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example,
that you should follow in his steps.
4. Perseverance
James 5:11 As you know, we consider
blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and
have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion
and mercy.
It is a refining process.
Job 23:10 But he knows the way that
I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
You can experience God
Job 42:5-6 My ears had heard of you but now
my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and
ashes."
We can become mature and complete.
James 1:4 Perseverance must finish its work
so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
5. Remember God is our comforter.
- Wife(2:9) His wife said
to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and
die!"
- Friends(6:14-15) A
despairing man should have the devotion of his friends, even though he forsakes
the fear of the Almighty. But my brothers are as undependable
as intermittent streams, as the streams that overflow.
2Corinthians 1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our
troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we
ourselves have received from God.
Listen to What God says
Psalm 119:50 My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise
preserves my life.
