We can contribute to society by using art and visual design to communicate important social issues. During the first semester, I read an article about Keith Haring, an American artist who used his artwork to raise awareness of social problems. The article explained that Haring created public artworks and participated in campaigns related to AIDS, children, and social equality. Through his story, I realized that visual art can be a powerful way to communicate with society.
Before Haring’s social activities became widely known, many important issues had been overlooked by the public. Haring used simple lines and symbols so that people could easily understand his messages. He himself created murals and posters for public service campaigns and worked with hospitals, schools, and community organizations. His work showed me that artists can use their skills not only for personal expression but also for the benefit of society.
A specific example of Haring’s social activism was his 1989 poster, Ignorance = Fear / Silence = Death. The poster was created to raise awareness of AIDS and encourage people to fight prejudice and silence surrounding the disease. At that time, AIDS education had been limited in many communities, so Haring used simple figures and strong visual symbols to make his message easy to understand. This example showed me that a clear visual design can attract attention and communicate an important message at the same time.
Inspired by Haring, I want to explore how visual design can contribute to society through my future career as a game graphic designer. I will study how characters, colors, backgrounds, and symbols can communicate social messages in games. I will myself analyze games that deal with social issues and examine how their visual elements affect players’ understanding and emotions.
In the future, I also want to create game characters or visual projects that contain positive social messages. By using creative visual designs, I hope to make people interested in social issues that they might otherwise ignore. Keith Haring taught me that we ourselves can use our creative abilities to make a positive contribution to society. I want to become a game graphic designer who creates not only enjoyable visuals but also meaningful experiences for people.
