Park bench? This was the nickname that was mooted for Park Ji-sung when he went to England and Manchester United last summer. Fans of the more cynical persuasion, and football fans are not known for lacking that trait, felt that the signing of the Korean was as much due to his ability to sell shirts than what he could do on the field.

벤치 박 Park bench? 이건 박지성이 지난 여름에 맨유로 왔을 때
불려졌던 별명이다. 팬들은 냉소적인 시각을 가지고 있었고 필드 위에서
활약하기보다는 티셔츠 장사에 더 도움을 주리라 생각했다.


United’s season is now two-thirds over and with the team’s next Premier League game not scheduled until March 6, now is as good time as any to take a look at how the ‘new engine’, as he has been named in the Korean media, is doing in the north-west of England.

맨유의 시즌은 2/3 이 지났고 3월 6일까지 다음 경기가 없는 상태에서
'신형 엔진' -한국 언론이 붙여준- 이 잉글랜드 북서부에서 어떻게 지내고
있는지 살펴보자.

The verdict has to be pretty good - not great - but the 24 year-old should be satisfied with his performances since the season started last August. A look at the amount of playing time that the player has enjoyed suggests that Park is a valuable part of the squad but not yet an automatic starter.

그는 꽤 괜찮은 활약을 하고 있다 - 아주 대단한건 아니지만 - 그러나 그 24살의
박지성은 8월 입단 후 자신의 활약에 대해 만족 하고 있다. 플레잉 시간을
보면 그는 스쿼드에 도움이 되는 선수임에는 틀림 없지만 확실한 주전 선수는
아니다.


Reporters talk of ‘first names that the coach writes on the teamsheet’ and while Park isn’t one of those at United, that title doesn’t belong to many of his team-mates either. Perhaps only goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar, defenders Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand and strikers Wayne Rooney, Ruud Van Nistlerooy and increasingly Christiano Ronaldo, can be secure in the knowledge that unless they are being rested for a forthcoming game, they will be starting on the pitch.

Park lies in between that select group and the back-up players. He always plays some part in the game but is never quite sure of how many minutes he will spend sitting on the bench (one that is heated at United’s Old Trafford stadium) or on the other, more active, side of the white line.

Out of the Red Devils 25 games this season, the former PSV star has been available for selection for all but two, due to a knee injury. He has seen action in all of the remaining 23 matches, a surprising statistic for those, including Guus Hiddink, who said that his former protege would be wasting his time at Old Trafford.

맨유가 25경기를 치운 현재 전 PSV 스타는 부상으로 제외된 2경기를 제외하고

“Park will be a waste of time at Manchester," said the PSV coach when ‘Ji’, as he his known by his new team-mates, signed for the two-time European champions."He will spend most of his time on the bench; it was not a wise decision for him to go. The Brazilian midfielder Kleberson is a good example for Park, he went to United and was a failure. Park should have stayed with PSV for another year.”

Those comments are beginning to sound less and less like the wisdom Koreans expect to come from the Dutchman’s mouth and more like sour grapes as the season progresses.

Out of the 2070 minutes that Park could have played so far this campaign, he has appeared in 1321, almost two-thirds of the possible time and he has started 15 of those matches and played the ‘full ninety’ seven times. After a number of his shots hit the bar and the post, the star scored his first goal on February 4 with the opener in his team’s 4-2 win over Fulham.

The statistics may not sound fantastic but it should be remembered that the days when the best teams fielded the same line-up week in, week out are gone -‘rotation’ is the watchword for leading clubs in the early part of the third millenium century.

Although Park is not yet an automatic starter for the club, for those who have followed his career there is an expectation of better to come. After a first year with PSV Eindhoven, Park and compatriot Lee, came under fire not just from fans, but from senior team-mates such as Marc van Bommel.

'They are here, but that is all you can say about them,” said the Dutch international midfielder in January 2004, a year after Park arrived in southern Holland. “They have not made any progression. When you say something about some mistake they make, they smile and then continue making them. That is quite frustrating.'

The PSV players were singing from a different songsheet 18 months later after Park had shone throughout the 2004/05 season. It is now the United players whose can often be heard singing the praises of their hard-working team-mate.

It hasn’t been, and still isn’t, plain sailing. Park is still knocked off the ball too easily in the hurly-burly world of English football and can too often be seen on the ground. The regularity of these occasions is declining and anyway, the player simply gets up without a word and starts again. That quiet demeanour masks a determination to succeed, one that has helped him move ever upwards in his career despite the fact that he has never played professional club football in his homeland.

"I may not be as handsome as Beckham but I feel I could be just as good as he is,” he said last month. "I understand the pressure of coming to Manchester United and the expectation of the fans over here. I want to show my value to United in terms of my ability, not for some marketing strategy in Asia.”

He has already shown that he has more to offer than providing an ‘in’ into the Asian market. It remains to be seen if he can take the next step; making himself an indispensable part of the Manchester United team.
