Pat Riley and the Miami Heat were forced into letting Jason Kapono go, reluctantly, because the Raptors threw so much money at him a minute after the midnight period that began free agency.

However, so early in the season, Riley appears to be regretting the move.

"If I had to do it over again, probably we may have invested in Kapono," Riley admits. "Young. A specialist. He can really shoot the ball." [READ]

Garbo Upset About Playing Time

Hansbrough And Hibbert Named To Preseason All-America Team

Tyler Hansbrough's junior year at North Carolina has begun much the same way his sophomore did, as the leading vote-getter on The Associated Press' preseason All-America team.

The 6-foot-9 forward was one vote shy of a unanimous pick Monday and was joined by senior center Roy Hibbert of Georgetown, senior guard Chris Lofton of Tennessee, senior guard Drew Neitzel of Michigan State and junior guard Darren Collison of UCLA.

The team was selected by the 72-member panel that votes in the weekly Top 25 poll. [READ]

Granger, in winning his first NBA Player of the Week honor, helped the Pacers open the season 3-0 for only the second time in the last 12 seasons by averaging 22.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals. The third-year forward converted half his field goal attempts, including a league-high 10 three-pointers. Granger scored at least 20 points in three consecutive games for the first time in his career.

McGrady led the Rockets to a 3-0 record, averaging a league-high 32.3 points on .500 shooting. McGrady also dished out 4.7 assists and pulled down 4.3 rebounds. In scoring 47 points at Utah Nov. 1, McGrady broke his own mark for most points by a Houston player against Utah. The Rockets opened the season 3-0 for the first time since 1996 and only the seventh time in team history. [READ]

But even though the Kings are desperate for frontcourt scoring, Hawes is not expected to play in Tuesday's home opener against Seattle. He's awaiting word from the team's training staff as to when his NBA career officially can begin.

"It feels a lot better," Hawes said. "I'm able to cut on it. ... Now it's just a question of testing it out in practice-type, game-like situations and trying to see how it responds and then going from there. It shouldn't be that much longer."

The Kings are exercising caution, unwilling to bring back Hawes too early and set the table for another setback.

"He's coming along," coach Reggie Theus said. "A lot of times what happens with stuff like that is it's really healed, but it's just not strong." [READ]

Nets' Carter Has A Sore Right Thumb

Vince Carter has a banged up right thumb that is annoying but not crippling. Carter admits he must alter his game to be more of a passer than a shooter.

Carter, who insists an X-ray is not necessary, said the thumb is affecting his shot a little bit.

"It's about getting used to the pain," Carter said. "As the game wears on, it gets better, strangely enough. It doesn't get worse."

"I don't know what to call it, just soreness. It's one of those things where you go, 'Ah, it's sore,' and you play, not tentative, but you kind of favor it." [READ]

Suns Induct Colangelo In Ring Of Honor

Jerry Colangelo, former CEO and current Chairman of the Phoenix Suns , was inducted into the Suns Ring of Honor, the club’s highest honor, during halftime of tonight’s (November 4) Suns-Cavaliers game.

All fans in attendance received a commemorative placard featuring a photo montage on one side and a “Thanks Jerry!” message on the other. In addition, as fans entered the game, they were able to write a personal message to Colangelo in the pavilion and enjoy photos of the honoree and memorable moments during his tenure with the Suns.

“The Phoenix Suns are proud to induct Jerry Colangelo into the Suns Ring of Honor,” said Suns' Managing Partner Robert Sarver. “Jerry exemplifies the commitment required to build a successful organization and has always done so with integrity and class.”

The induction ceremony took place at halftime, with “The Voice of the Phoenix Suns ”, Al McCoy serving as emcee. Ring of Honor members were on hand for the ceremony, which featured comments from Kevin Johnson, Dan Majerle and Robert Sarver, with Colangelo’s family and friends nearby. Microsoft Deals To Download ESPN Content On Xbox

Microsoft Corp. has added college basketball and other ESPN programming to the growing lineup of video content available for download to its Xbox 360 video game console.

Microsoft and ESPN said people can purchase complete NCAA basketball and football games, the X Games sports competitions and programs like ESPN's "Madden Nation," which chronicles a competition of "Madden NFL" video game players, from the Xbox Live Web site.

Xbox 360 users can buy commercial-free standard-definition versions of select NCAA games for $3, and high-definition versions for $4.50, within 48 hours of the game's conclusion. ESPN TV shows, like the other TV content on the Xbox Live download site, cost $2 for standard-definition and $3 for high-def versions.

As part of the agreement, ESPN is considering ways to incorporate the Xbox Live online gaming community into its telecasts. ESPN spokesman Paul Melvin said there are no firm plans for how this will be done. [READ]

Corey Maggette scored 27 points and Tim Thomas made three 3-pointers during a one-minute span late in the fourth quarter, leading the Clippers to a 115-101 victory today.

Thomas finished with 20 points, Cuttino Mobley added 17 and Chris Kaman had 15 rebounds for the Clippers, who were coming off a season-opening 120-114 win against Golden State on Friday night. They started out a franchise-record 6-0 at home last year before the Sonics snapped that streak with a 95-85 victory.

"We're capable of playing an up-tempo game. We just want to establish it to play the right way and win ballgames," Maggette said. "We need to get the ball to open guys and make some shots. And we've been doing that the past couple of games."

Kevin Durant led Seattle with 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists. The 6-foot-9 forward is averaging 23 points and 36.3 minutes through his first three NBA games.

"We felt from the beginning he would play a lot and play big minutes, and that's the way it's evolving," coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "He's going to have the same trials and tribulations that all rookies have. The difference is, he's going to get more meaningful minutes than most rookies get in this league. He's going to have nights where he's going to look unbelievable for a 19-year-old, and others where he's going to look like a rookie." [READ]

The Cavs failed to pick up the third-year option on Brown's contract on Wednesday. That will make him an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Bartelstein said he wasn't shocked by the move not to pick up Brown's option worth just $1.1 million.

"For a variety of reasons, it's not been a good fit for Shannon,'' he said. "He hasn't gotten much of an opportunity. He's a young guy who has to play.

"Danny and I have a good relationship," Bartelstein added. "He has two things in mind: What's best for the organization and what's best for the player. He'll work with me to find the right situation for Shannon." [READ]

The Chicago Bulls are off to a slow start once again, with Luol Deng, Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich all struggling.

Both Deng and Gordon turned down contract extensions last week, and both have been included in trade rumors for Laker superstar Kobe Bryant.

It's impossible not to wonder if Deng's and Gordon's struggles are related to their decisions to turn down multi-million dollar contract extensions and their mention in frequent Kobe Bryant trade rumors, writes Chicago Tribune columnist K.C. Johnson.

Both players continue to offer the right words. But with confirmation that Deng turned down an increased five-year offer worth nearly $57.5 million, speculation about regrets is legitimate.

"The contract and the trade rumors, I try to focus on my game," Deng said. "I don't want to blame me struggling on something like that. When I'm on the floor, I'm supposed to perform and produce. And I haven't done that the last two games."

Said Gordon: "In the NBA, there are distractions all the time. You have to play through those things. You can't let them get into your head and affect your game. When you're on the court, that's the only time you can block everything out. We have to play, have fun and work hard." [READ]

Warriors' Barnes Struggling For Playing Time

I'm going to try to do what I can to help my team and get out there, figure out what I need to do to get on the court. ... I'm playing 10 minutes a game. I didn't think that was going to happen."

Barnes acknowledged that his play had been less than stellar in the initial pair of games -- he shot 27.3 percent from the floor, 16.7 percent on 3-pointers and grabbed only four rebounds.

"I'm very frustrated," Barnes said. "It's just hard going in for 2 minutes and coming out. So I've got to fix my mistakes and figure out what I need to do to stay out there." [READ]

Celtics' Rivers Leaves Team After Learning Of Father's Death
