Summary:
Paul reminds the Thessalonians that he had already taught them these things while he was with them. They know what presently restrains the man of lawlessness so that he will be revealed only at his appointed time. Although the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, the one who restrains it will continue until he is removed. Then the lawless one will be revealed, but the Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of His mouth and bring him to an end by the appearance of His coming.
Teaching:
It is true that the appointed time of the beast has not yet come. Nevertheless, the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, and the man of lawlessness, the son of destruction, is being prepared. The mystery of lawlessness existed long ago and continues to operate in the present.
Although it has not yet been fully revealed, the mystery of lawlessness is working beneath the surface. Therefore, Scripture warns us not to be deceived. The reason the church has not been overturned and is still able to grow is that God is protecting and preserving it.
A truly wise person seeks to believe in God and obey His Word in every possible way.
The deception associated with the man of lawlessness is already at work, so we must remain watchful. We should devote ourselves to the Word and prayer, examining the purpose, direction, and substance of our daily lives. We must discern God’s will and courageously abandon whatever is contrary to it.
As we do this, our souls are purified, and when this purified way of life continues, we grow in holiness. Therefore, even if living according to the Word brings hardship, inconvenience, or personal disadvantage, we should not give up. If we remain faithful to God’s Word, the day of Jesus’ coming will be a day of hope and joy.
