1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 생명의 약속에 따라 하나님의 뜻으로 그리스도 예수의 사도가 된 바울은
1:2 To Timothy, my dear son: 나의 사랑하는 아들 디모데에게

 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

하나님 아버지와 그리스도 예수 우리 주로부터 은혜와 긍휼과 평강이 있으라.

1:3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did,

나는 나의 선조들이 했던 것처럼 내가 섬기는 하나님께 감사한다.

with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly(끊임없이) remember you in my prayers.

깨끗한 양심으로 밤낮 끊임없이 너를 내 기도 가운데 기억한다.

1:4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.

너의 눈물을 떠올리며 내가 기쁨으로 충만하기 위해 너를 보기를 열망한다.

1:5 I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 우선 네 할머니 로이스와 너의 어머니 유니스 안에 살아있었던 너의 신실한 믿음을 다시 생각했고 지금 네 안에도 또한 살아있다고 나는 설득되었다.

1:6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

그러므로 내가 너에게 일깨우는 것은 내가 안수함으로써 네 안에 있는 하나님의 은사를 다시 불일 듯 하게 하라는 것이다.

1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

하나님은 소심하게 하는 영을 우리에게 주시지 않으셨고 오히려 능력과 사랑과 절제의 영을 주셨다. 

1:8 So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. 

그래서 우리 주에 대해 증거하는데 있어서나 또는 내가 그의 죄수가 된 나를 부끄러워하지 말라.

But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, 
1:9 who has saved us and called us to a holy life--not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.

우리가 행한 어떤 것 때문이 아니라 그의 목적과 은혜 때문에 우리를 구원하셨고 우리를 거룩한 삶으로 부르셨던 하나님의 능력으로 복음을 위해 고난받는데 있어서 나와 함께 합류하자.

This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,

이 은혜는 시간의 시작 이전에 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 주어졌다.

1:10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

그러나 그것은 죽음을 파괴하시고 생명과 복음을 통해 빛으로 영원함을 가져오셨던 그리스도 예수 우리 주의 나타나심을 통하여 계시되어졌다.
