  Level 16 :  Jasu(自修,자수)... Cultivating oneself... Item No. 303  

自修(자수)는 스스로 자신의 착함을 닦는 것이다.

  " Jasu(自修,자수 - Self- Cultivation)" means cultivating one′s own goodness by oneself.

남에게 착함을 드러내는 것을 할 수 없는 것이라 하는 것이요,
남에게 착함을 권하는 것 역시 할 수 없는 것이라 하면 이는 다만 혼자서 착함을 닦는 것이다.

  If one considers displaying goodness to others impossible, 

  and likewise considers urging goodness upon others impossible,

  this is merely cultivating goodness alone.

남의 크게 착함을 이룸을 듣고 갑자기 이를 부끄러워함은 좋은 성품이니 가히 그 福(복)을 받을 수 있게 된다.

  However, hearing of others achieving great goodness and suddenly feeling ashamed

   [of one′s own shortcomings] reflects a good nature, which makes one worthy of receiving

   its blessings.

自修者는 自修己善也라 (자수자는 자수기선야라)

 "Jasu(Self-Cultivation)" means cultivating one′s own goodness by oneself.  

著人善은 曰不能이요 (저인선은 왈불능이요)

  Saying, "I cannot display goodness to others,"

權人善은 亦曰不能이라하면 徒自修善이요 (권인선은 역왈불능이라하면 도자수선이요)

  And likewise saying, "I cannot encourage goodness in others,"

  amounts to merely cultivating goodness alone.

聞人大善而輒愧之는 良性也니 可領其福이니라. (문인대선이첩괴지는 양성야니 가령기복이니라.)

  However, hearing of another′s great virtue and immediately feeling ashamed  

  [of one′s own shortcomings] is good nature, which makes one worthy of receiving its blessimgs.
