The Purpose of the Law

Summary:
Paul explains that the law is good when used properly. It is not intended for the righteous but for those who are lawless, rebellious, ungodly, sinful, unholy, and opposed to sound teaching. The law addresses conduct that contradicts the sound doctrine revealed in the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which had been entrusted to Paul.


Teaching:
The sins listed in today’s passage are examples. Therefore, all related actions are also sins. The law exists for such sins and sinners, and through the law, we must be able to recognize sin for what it is.

The law is good for believers when it is used properly and correctly. Using the law lawfully means recognizing sin as sin through it. God gave us the law to show us what pleases Him and what does not. The law is the boundary God has given us that we must not cross.

Through Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection, those who believe in Him, although deserving death under the law, are given life instead. They are also given the power to do what God commands them to do.
