#1. Humming Birds Amaze Scientists with Speed
Chris Clark of the University of California has discovered something extraordinary about a common humming bird species called Anna's Hummingbird. He discovered that when males dive down to impress females they pull more g's than any other flying animal. When they pull out of their dives they experience forces more than nine times the force of gravity, which is almost enough to put fighter pilots to shame. They do it by climbing about 30 meters into the air and them going into a dive, even flapping their wings to pick up speed. They then shoot past the female at speeds of up to 61 miles an hour and then pull up just in time to avoid crashing. That makes them pound-for-pound the fastest birds in the sky. Measured in body lengths per second, Anna's humming birds can fly faster than fighter jets.
* Pull g's
- Generate g-forces
- g ->빠른 속도로 움직이다가 방향을 틀 때 느껴지는 중력의 힘
"pull g's" -> 그 중력의 힘을 느끼도록 방향을 트는 행동

* Put to shame
- Outdo, eclipse, as in Jane's immaculate kitchen puts mine to shame. This idiom modifies the literal sense of put to shame, that is, "disgrace someone," to the much milder "cause to feel inferior."

#2. Mars Predicted to Slam into Earth
According to two French scientists, Mars and Earth will one day collide into one another. There's no cause for alarm, though, because the disastrous event is not expected to happen for another 5 billion years, give or take. Scientists already know that at about that time the Sun will grow into what is called a red giant and engulf the inner planets anyway, so the idea that the Earth will be destroyed in 5 billion years is nothing new. However, the scientists who came up with the results say that it brings closure to one of the longest-running problems in astronomy. It's Mercury that is going to cause everything to end in tears. The small planet closest to the Sun has an irregular orbit, which means its gravity will over time affect the orbits of the other inner planets just enough to send them crashing into each other.
* Give or take
- plus or minus a small amount, or approximately
- 다소의 차이는 있다고 치더라도, 대략, 대체로, 약
* Bring closure
- bringing to an end or conclusion
- 마감하다, 끝나게 하다, 끝내다
* End in tears
- something will end badly and the people involved will be upset
- 눈물로 끝나다, 좋지 않게 끝나다
