베토벤 交響曲 제 9번 - 合 唱
베토벤 음악의 최고 절정을 이루고 있으며, 고금의 교향곡 중에서 가장 뛰어난 걸작품의 하나.
마지막 4 악장에 독일의 위대한 시인 프리드리히 쉴러(Fridrich Schillers)의 長詩 An die Freude <환희의 송가> 에 의한 합창 붙임을 가진 교향곡이며, 네 사람의 독창과 대합창이 사용된 최초의 교향곡이다.
23세의 젊은 베토벤은 <환희의 송가>를 읽고 음악으로 표현하려고 마음먹었었다. 그러나 실제로 <환희의 노래>가 교향곡에 담겨 완성된 것은 31년 뒤인 1824년이다. 베토벤이 처음으로 교향악과 칸타타의 결합을 시도한 것은 1808년의 《합창 환상곡》작품 80번에서였으며 이 시도 가 후에 《합창》교향곡이란 위대한 작품을 만들게 하는 밑거름이 되었다.
이 곡을 작곡할 당시 베토벤은 거의 청력을 상실한 상태로 육체적인 건강의 악화와 가난 때문에 그의 생활은 지극히 고통스러웠다. 그러한 환경에서 그는 고뇌를 이겨낸 환희를 영원히 노래 부르고 음으로써 표현한 것이다. 그는 예술에 의해 인간의 고난을 극복했으며 역경에 놓일수록 그것을 이겨나가는 초인적인 힘을 발휘했던 것이다.
初 演 (Premiere)
초연은 1824년 5월 7일 금요일 빈의 케른트네르토르 극장(K?rntnertortheater) 에서 였다. 베토벤도 함께 한 무대에서 움라우프(Michael Umlauf)의 지휘로 베토벤 자신의 다른 작품 '헌당식 서곡' (the overture Die Weihe des Hauses), '장엄 미사'(Missa Solemnis)와 함께 연주되었다. 베토벤은 무대옆에 앉아서 매 악장의 시작시 템포를 주고 악보를 넘기며 전혀 들을 수 없는 관현악단의 소리에 박자를 맞추었다.
초연에 대한 일화는 여러가지가 있으나 어쨋든 큰 성공이었다고 한다. 비올라 연주자 Josef Bohm 는 당시를 이렇게 술회했다.
" 베토벤은 자신이 직접 지휘를 하였는데 악보대앞에 서서 마치 모든 악기들을 자신이 연주하고 , 합창 전부를 자신이 노래하고 싶은 듯 격렬한 몸짓으로 연주를 이끌었다"
등을 지고 서 있던 베토벤이 청중들의 환호와 열광적인 박수소리를 듣지 못하자, 알토 가수인 웅거(Caroline Unger)가 베토벤에게 다가와 그를 돌려세워 청중들의 환호에 답례하게 했다. 한 악장이 끝날 때마다 박수갈채와 환호가 계속되었고 연주가 끝나자 모든 청중들은 다섯차례의 기립박수(standing ovations)를 보냈으며 그의 답례에 청중들은 감격하여 눈물을 흘리며 더욱 열렬한 갈채를 보냈다고 한다.
당시 오스트리아에서 황제부처가 입장할 때 세번의 기립으로 맞이한 관례와 비교하면 한 개인에 불과한 그것도 신분상 하인정도에 그쳤던 음악가에게 이러한 대접은 허용될 수 없는 매우 파격적인 사건이었던 것이었다. 경찰은 이 자발적인 박수갈채를 제지시켰고 베토벤은 대단히 감동하며 연주회장을 나섰다고 한다.
5월 23일 성내의 대회당에서 다시 연주가 이어졌으나 참석한 청중이 적었었고 또한 당시에는 이 교향곡에 대한 부정적인 비판이 많았다고 한다.
제 4 악장
관현악의 서주로부터 시작되는 이 악장은 변주곡 형식으로 형식적인 것보다는 고뇌를 극복하고 환희에 도달한 음악 내용이 압도적인 힘으로 다가온다.
먼저 관악기만으로 숨가쁘고 리드미컬한 곡조들은 제1, 제2, 제3악장의 주요한 악상을 회고하는 것이다. 그리고 그것들은 베토벤 자신이 <아니다(Nein)>라고 적어 넣은 첼로와 콘트라베이스에 의한 레치타티보(recitativo 敍唱)풍 의 가락을 무반주로 제시한다. 그리고 망설이던 《환희》의 주제가 되풀이된다.
리드미컬한 팡파르가 짧은 명상을 깨뜨리고 울리다가 멎고, 바리톤이 힘차게 노래를 시작한다.
오! 벗들이여 이 가락이 아니고 더욱 즐거운 가락 그리고 환희에 넘친 가락을 함께 부르자!
이 가사는 쉴러의 시에 의한 것이 아니고 베토벤 자신이 붙인 것이다. 바리톤 독창은 이어서 처음에 기악으로 모습을 보였던 레치타티보 가락에 의한 환희의 주제를 노래부른다.
환희여! 아름다운 주의 빛, 낙원에서 온 아가씨여, 정열에 넘치는 우리들은 그대의 성정에 들어가리. 그대의 매력은 가혹한 세상의 모습에 의해 떨어진 것을 다시 결합시키도다. 그대의 날개에 머물 때 모든 사람들은 형제가 되리.
이 노래는 모두 함께 부를 수 있는 16마디로 된 민요풍의 노래이다.
곡은 일변하여 안단테 G장조 3박자로 위엄있게 변한다. 남성 합창이 코랄풍의 노래를 장중하게 부르기 시작하여 높은 음의 현과 함께 여성이 등장한다.
포옹하라! 만민들이여! 온 세상에게 이 입맞춤을 주리. 형제들이여! 푸른 하늘 위에는 사랑하는 주가 꼭 계시리. 땅에 엎드려 비나니 만물들이여 조물주를 믿는가? 푸른 하늘 위에서 주를 찾으라. 많은 별 위에 그는 꼭 계실 것이다.
이윽고 혼성합창으로 포옹하라의 선율과 환희의 주제가 얽힌 장려한 2중 푸가가 전개된다. 알레그로 에네르지코 셈플 마르카토의 D장조 6/4박자이다. 2중 푸가가 귀결부로 들어가면서 다시 기도의 대화가 시작된다. 그리고는 곡상이 변하여 2/2 박자의 조심성 있는 알레그로로 된다. 환희의 주제에 의한 변주로 돌아가서 네 명의 독창자와 합창이 《환희의 송가》 첫 구절의 새로운 변주를 반복하여 노래한다. 그리고 마지막은 전곡의 코다가 되어 독창과 합창은 프레스티시모로 열광적인 환희를 노래한다.
품에 안겨라. 만민들이여! 온 세상에 이 입맞춤을 주리... 환희여! 아름다운 주의 빛, 낙원에서 온 아가씨들이여, 환희 여, 아름다운 주의 빛.
마지막에 전 관현악 악기는 합창과 함께 무한한 환희 속에서 화려하게 이 대곡을 끝낸다. 베토벤 자신의 말처럼 "고뇌를 돌파하고 환희에 도달" 한다.

Beethoven Symphony No.9 op.125 D minor is the last complete
symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Completed in 1824,
it includes part of the Ode An die Freude ("Ode To Joy") by Friedrich
Schiller, with text sung by soloists and a chorus in the last move-
ment. It is the first example of a major composer using the human
voice on the same level with instruments in a symphony.
The official name is: Symphony No. 9 in D minor, opus 125. The
symphony is sometimes referred to as "Choral", pointing to the
vocal end of the symphony.
Beethoven had wanted to set Schiller's 'Ode to Joy' to music for
many years, and in fact later stated that he had wished to write
an alternative instrumental ending to the Ninth Symphony, leaving
an interpretation of the 'Ode to Joy' as a separate work. |
This symphony is one of the best known of all works of European classical music, and is considered one of Beethoven's greatest masterpieces, composed while he was completely deaf. It plays a prominent cultural role in modern society.
In particular, the music from the fourth movement (Ode to Joy) is used as the official anthem of the European Union (the German lyrics have no official status). Further testament to its prominence is that an original manuscript of this work sold in 2003 for 3.3 million dollars. Due to the universal appeal of this symphony, it is now part of the UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
