To Women

Summary:
Paul instructs a woman to learn quietly and submissively, and he does not permit her to teach or exercise authority over a man. He supports this instruction by referring to the order of creation and to Eve’s deception and transgression. He concludes that women will be preserved through childbearing if they continue in faith, love, holiness, and self-restraint.


Teaching:
When a church is still weak and in the process of growing, a woman may teach, exercise leadership over men, or even carry out pastoral ministry. Under normal circumstances, however, when men are able to lead their families and serve the church faithfully, it is appropriate for men to assume that responsibility.

The principle is that women should not take leadership roles in the church, but this principle should not be applied uniformly to every situation.

Even when a man has shortcomings, a woman should help and encourage him to fulfill his proper role within the family.

The Greek word translated here as “self-restraint” refers to exercising self-control and remaining within the boundaries of one’s proper role. It also conveys the idea of maintaining sound judgment. A woman is therefore to learn with a quiet and submissive attitude in her relationships with men and within the church. By continuing in faith, love, holiness, and self-restraint, she will be saved.
