Qualification of Church Worker (2)

Summary:
An overseer must manage his own household well, keeping his children under control with dignity. If a man does not know how to manage his own household, he will not be able to care properly for the church of God.


Teaching:
The term “overseer” may be understood broadly to include pastors, elders, deacons, teachers, shepherds, coordinators, leaders, small-group leaders, and district leaders. This passage applies particularly to the roles of elder, pastor, and deacon, which are held by men.

A church worker must be a man who manages his household well. This does not mean exercising power over his family. Rather, he should take the lead in all things and set a good example for his wife and children.

Pastoral ministry means “caring well for others.” It involves nurturing people, with attentive concern at its core. In other words, it means caring for people with genuine interest and concern.

Church ministry is the work of caring for people, and church workers are responsible for caring for the church. A person who manages his household well will also care for the church well.

Ultimately, serving the church means caring for people. Therefore, all of us must learn to care for others well.
