Qualification of Church Worker (3)

Summary:
An overseer must not be a new believer, lest he become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation among those outside the church so that he does not fall into disgrace and the devil’s trap.

Teaching:
A person whose character differs inside and outside the church should not be appointed as an overseer. Mature faith is marked by consistency: consistency between one’s conduct inside and outside the church, between one’s past and present life, and between one’s words and actions.

An overseer does not need to be popular, but he must have a good reputation. This protects him from falling into disgrace and the devil’s trap.

When appointing an overseer, the church must examine both his life inside the church and his conduct outside it. The appointment should be made according to the clear qualifications set forth in Scripture.
