Summary:
A widow placed on the church’s support list must be at least sixty years old, have been faithful in marriage, and be known for good works, including raising children, showing hospitality, serving God’s people, assisting those in distress, and devoting herself to every good work.
Younger widows are not to be placed on the list, since they may later desire marriage and abandon their previous commitment. They may also become idle, going from house to house as gossips and busybodies and speaking about improper matters. Instead, younger widows are encouraged to marry, have children, manage their households, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach.
Believers who have dependent widows must care for them so that the church is not burdened and can support those who are truly alone.
Teaching:
Whether young or old, people should marry, have children, and build a family as they grow older. Otherwise, whether young or old, they may entertain other thoughts, disregard God’s Word, and seek to live as they please. As they grow old alone, they may fail to develop a sound and proper faith. To have a sound faith, one must live a sound and proper life. Unless God has specifically called someone to remain single, one should marry, have children, and build a family. Through this, one comes to understand and enjoy life and draws closer to heaven.
The conclusion of today’s passage is that the church should not be unnecessarily burdened with supporting widows. The church exists to proclaim the gospel. The church should also assist true widows, and we must accept the qualifications given for a true widow.
All of God’s holy people, including true widows, must be dignified, not presumptuous, self-controlled, and faithful in all things. Do not forget your first commitment of faith but continue following the Word until the end.
