Summary:
Elders who lead well are to be regarded as worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. Scripture supports this by declaring that an ox should not be muzzled while threshing and that a worker deserves his wages. An accusation against an elder must not be accepted unless it is supported by two or three witnesses. However, elders who persist in sin are to be rebuked publicly so that others will also fear sinning.
Teaching:
In the church, the elders are those who serve as its senior leaders, while an overseer is the title given to a pastor who ministers to the church. Therefore, elders and overseers should be understood as referring to the same office. Deacons are also church workers who care for the church, but overseers and elders are responsible for caring for the entire congregation. In today’s passage, they may be understood as present-day pastors.
Give double honor to the elders. Give double honor to your pastors. Even when you notice their shortcomings, do not find fault with them or speak about them behind their backs. Respect them and listen carefully to the Word they teach.
When people treat those who teach the Word lightly and fail to show them proper respect, their lives are wasted. When we obey within the Word, God unfailingly gives us fruit.
