Summary:
Paul addresses Timothy directly: guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called "knowledge," which some have professed and in so doing have gone astray from the faith.
The letter closes: "Grace be with you."
Teaching:
The problem of speech is the greatest problem inside the church. Preaching the gospel is done with words, and damaging that same gospel is also done with words. The opposing arguments of worldly, empty, and false knowledge are precisely the arguments raised against the gospel Paul preached.
It includes people who neither read the Bible nor know it, yet offer this or that interpretation of it and push their own opinions. It also includes listening to a sermon and then saying, "Well, my own thinking is such and such."
We must be one in carrying out the righteousness and justice of Scripture. So study what the Bible says about righteousness and justice, and let that be what you talk about.
Within the church, work on the basis of the Word and the Holy Spirit. Inside the church, it is the Word—without exception. Healthy discussion in the church is good. When we come together admitting that each of us falls short and genuinely trying to understand one another, then even with different thoughts, different knowledge, and different interpretations, the conversation itself brings us together at a meeting point we never expected, and we come to see one another as fellow workers. A person of the truth has both manners and depth.
