Summary:
Paul urges Timothy not to be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of Paul himself, His prisoner. Instead, Timothy is to join with Paul in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God.
That God is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling—not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace. This grace was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
For this gospel Paul was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher.
Teaching:
Every Christian is one who has testified to the Lord. As you testify, you come in for abuse from people and you suffer disadvantage. To live as a witness who testifies of Jesus is to live by faith. In testifying of Jesus, it may even be better to go without and to live poorly. Living the life of a witness who proclaims the Lord is accomplished by the power of God, not by our own strength.
A calling is a summons, and a summons is a calling. We do not simply attend church—He has called us. God has a desire, and to do according to that desire is faith. Never evade it.
The calling is always bound up with the work of God—we have been called into the work of fulfilling God's administration. Therefore we must work, and all holy people of God must become laborers who work in the church.
This is not something we became laborers for because our faith is good or because we are good at something. It came about by the grace of God that is in Christ Jesus.
Every worker in the church is one who proclaims the gospel.
