잡지를 보고 있는데, 이런 구절이 나왔다.

"...[연결되는 사람이 적다고 느껴지면], simply start plying your network

for more contacts, and, like six degrees of Kevin Bacon, you'll soon

have a connection to just about anyone you'd ever care to meet."

* ply = use or wield diligently

* contacts = 유력한(도움이 되는) 지인(知人)들

대학생들에게 Personal Network를 잘 관리하라는 충고의 글이었다.

"six degrees of Kevin Bacon"에서 Kevin Bacon은 영화 "Footloose"의

주인공으로 나온 춤 잘 추는 배우이다.

간단히 말해 Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon은 게임인데, 어떤 영화배우를

거명하면 그 사람을 최대한 Kevin Bacon과 연결하는 것이 목적이다.

엘비스 프레슬리를 예로 들면,

  - Elvis Presley was in Change of Habit (1969) with Edward Asner

  - Edward Asner was in JFK (1991) with Kevin Bacon

다음 예는 Kevin Bacon 자신이 이 게임을 한 것이다.

  Will: You -- you did a movie with Val Kilmer?

  Kevin: No, but Val was in "Top Gun" with Tom Cruise, and Tom

         was in "A Few Good Men" with me. Huh, that was a short one.

위 두 예는 단 두 단계에 걸쳐서 어떤 사람과 Kevin Bacon을 연결한 것이다.

게임에서는 "Bacon number"라는 점수를 부여하는데, 위 경우는 모두 2이다.

이 게임은 확장되어 연결되는 주체가 Kevin Bacon이 아니고 다른 사람이 될

수도 있다.

실은 우리가 흔히 "대한민국 사람은 몇 다리를 거치면 모두 연결된다."라고

말을 하곤 한다. 그렇게 어떤 두 사람을 연결해 보는 게임이라고 보면 될 것이다.

다음과 같은 예가 재미있는 연결 방법이 될 것이다.

Bacon also appeared in a commercial for the Visa check card that

parodied the game. In the commercial, Bacon wants to write a check

to buy a book, but the clerk asks for his ID and he does not have it.

He leaves and returns with a group of people, then says to the clerk,

"Okay, I was in a movie with an extra, Eunice, whose hairdresser,

Wayne, attended Sunday school with Father O'Neill, who plays racquetball

with Dr. Sanjay, who recently removed the appendix of Kim, who dumped

you sophomore year. So you see, we're practically brothers."
