Summary:
In these closing verses of the chapter, Paul turns to names and conduct. He tells Timothy that all who are in Asia turned away from him, and he singles out two of them - Phygelus and Hermogenes.
Against that desertion he sets Onesiphorus. Paul asks the Lord to grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed Paul and was not ashamed of his chains. On the contrary, when Onesiphorus was in Rome, he eagerly searched for Paul and found him. Paul then prays that the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day. And he reminds Timothy that he knows very well how many services Onesiphorus rendered at Ephesus.
Teaching:
Our God is a God who weighs with scales and measures with a measuring rod. All our words and actions - how we earn our money and how we spend it - are measured by Him. So what evaluation will we receive?
Please, receive the verdict that Onesiphorus received. Phygelus and Hermogenes have been dead for two thousand years, yet they are recorded in Scripture and remembered under a bad name. Onesiphorus, on the other hand, has also been dead for two thousand years, and he is still remembered as the man who helped Paul and helped the church in Ephesus.
By the Holy Spirit given to us, with love and power, become the laboring holy people of God whom your pastor remembers.
