Summary:
Paul tells Timothy to think about what he has just said, because the Lord will give him understanding in everything.
He then tells Timothy to remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead and a descendant of David, according to Paul's gospel. For that gospel, Paul suffers hardship, even to the point of being imprisoned as a criminal. Yet the word of God is not imprisoned.
Teaching:
Our daily reading of Scripture and listening to sermons must build up over time. Only then can we make the right judgments we need in everyday life. Workers in the church must have this kind of understanding, and they must keep training in it until the day they die.
Worshiping every day, or on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, keeps us from drifting away from God. It also keeps us from forgetting Him out of pride when things go well for us.
The seed of David had to come as a man, grow up as a man, die, and rise again, and then give us the Holy Spirit. The Old Testament says this many times. Yet the people of the Old Testament did not remember it or did not understand it. That is because they did not remember the word or think about it, so they lacked discernment, that is, insight.
When we live by the gospel, people may look at us unfavorably. In reality, they judge us that way because they are sinners who have left God, and their judgment is wrong. So that we are not held captive by their criticism and condemnation, think on this word, have an understanding marked by insight, and keep remembering Jesus.
