Summary:
Paul says that Hymenaeus and Philetus have wandered away from the truth. They claim the resurrection has already happened, and this is upsetting the faith of some people.
Even so, God's firm foundation still stands. It carries a seal with two statements. First, the Lord knows who belongs to Him. Second, everyone who names the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.
Paul then gives an illustration. A large house has vessels of gold and silver, but it also has vessels of wood and clay. Some are used for honorable purposes, and others for dishonorable ones. If someone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor. He will be set apart, useful to the Master, and ready for every good work.
So Timothy is to run from youthful desires. He should pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, together with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. He must also refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, because he knows they lead to quarrels.
Teaching:
The church is the foundation of truth. The church is truly the church when the Word of truth stands firm, and when the truth grows weak, the church loses what makes it the church. So the church must guard against any gospel other than the true gospel coming in, and it should not leave alone those who speak such things.
All of God's plan is God's good work. This means that if we are not clean, we cannot be used for good works. So the church workers whom God uses are those He has sealed, and those He seals live differently. They eat and drink differently, and they earn and spend money differently.
We come to church to be saved. Flee from what we should flee from, follow what we should follow, and become good workers of the church.
