오늘만큼은 '행복하자'
링컨의 말처럼
사람은 스스로 행복해지려고 결심한
정도만큼 행복해진다.
오늘만큼은 '주변 상황에 맞추어 행동하자'
무엇이나 자신의 욕망대로만 하려 하지 말자.
오늘만큼은 '몸을 조심하자'
운동을 하고 충분한 영양을 섭취하자..
몸을 혹사 시키거나 절대 무리하지 말자.
오늘만큼은 '정신을 굳게 차리자'
무엇인가 유익한 일을 배우고,나태해지지 않도록 하자.
그리고,노력과 사고와 집중력을 필요로 하는 책을 읽자.
오늘만큼은 '남에게 눈치채지 않도록 친절을 다하자'
남 모르게 무언가 좋은 일을 해 보자..
정신 수양을 위해 두가지 정도는
자기가 하고 싶지 않는 일을 하자.
오늘만큼은 '기분좋게 살자'
남에게 상냥한 미소를 짓고,
어울리는 복장으로 조용히 이야기하며,
예절 바르게 행동하고,아낌없이 남을 칭찬하자.
오늘만큼은 ' 이 하루가 보람되도록 하자'
인생의 모든 문제는 한꺼번에 해결되지 않는다..
하루가 인생의 시작인 것 같은 기분으로 오늘을 보내자.
오늘만큼은 '계획을 세우자'
매 시간의 예정표를 만들자..
조급함과 망설임이라는 두가지 해충을 없애도록 마음을 다지자.
할 수 있는데까지 해 보자.
오늘만큼은 '30분정도의 휴식을 갖고 마음을 정리해 보자'
때로는 신을 생각하고 인생을 관조해 보자.
자기 인생에 대한 올바른 인식을 얻도록 하자.
오늘만큼은 '그 무엇도 두려워하지 말자'
특히,아름다움을 즐기며 사랑하도록 하자.
사랑하는 사람이 나를 사랑한다는 믿음을 의심하지 말자.

Sybil Farish Partridge (1856- circa 1920) 영국출신
Born: Circa 1856, London, Middlesex, England / In 1881 Partridge was a governess in a school in Liverpool, while living in the convent of Notre Dame.
As a result of extensive correspondence…I received an invitation to call upon [the author of “Just for Today,” previously identified only as] S. M. X. in the convent of Notre Dame, on Mount Pleasant, Liverpool.
I found her a charming, sweet-faced nun of the Roman Catholic faith who had given her life to teaching in that ancient school for girls. She was perhaps 60 years of age, small of stature, most gracious in demeanor, of attractive personality and withal most unassuming and retiring.
I told her I had come to pay my respects to the author of “Lord, for tomorrow and its needs,” and to tell her how much we thought of it in America. She modestly disclaimed what she assumed to be praise, and said she knew little of the world outside of her four walls, and did not know that her little fugitive had traveled so far. I told her I was a Presbyterian living in Chicago [Illinois], and that we Americans loved her hymn, and wanted to know of its author and her real name…
Finally, the nun answered my query directly, “Yes, I’ll give you my name. It is Sybil F. Partridge. But it would be my preference that the great world outside should not know it till after I am gone.” She had hectic cough, and I learn she recently has passed away, so I am at liberty now to tell the story.
…[She] was good enough to give me, in her own handwriting, the full poem of nearly a dozen stanzas, to which as an addendum, she appended the verse following, written for me in remembrance of the visit I am describing.
Since “Today” gave to me in you a friend,
Unknown, unseen for long, so to the end,
I pray you let me, too, that title borrow;
And keep, I pray you, in your mindful prayer
The name which you discovered with such care~
Till we shall see and know, in God’s tomorrow!
"Just for Today"이란 글은 100년 전에 Sibyl F. Partridge가 쓴 것으로 세계적 경영컨설턴트였던 데일 카네기의 저서 “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living(걱정을 중단하고 삶에 뛰어들기)”에 인용되어져 유명해진 것이다.

I. Just for today I will be happy. This assumes that what Lincoln said is true, that “most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Happiness is from within; it is not a matter of externals.
II. Just for today I will adjust myself to what is, and not adjust everything to my own desires. I will take my family, my business, and my luck as they come and fit myself to them.
III. Just for today I will take care of my body. I will exercise it, care for it, nourish it, not abuse it, so that it will be a perfect machine for my bidding.
IV. Just for today I will strengthen my mind. I will learn something useful. I will not be a mental loafer. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.
V. Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways. I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out. I will do two things I don’t want to do, as William James suggests, just for exercise.
VI. Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress as becomingly as possible, talk low, act courteously, be liberal with praise, criticize not at all, nor find fault with anything and not try to regulate or improve anyone.
VII. Just for today I will live through this day only, not tackle my whole life problem at once. I can do things for twelve hours that would appall me if I had to keep them up for a lifetime.
VIII. Just for today I will have a program. I will write down what I expect to do every hour. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. It will eliminate two pests; hurry and indecision.
IX. Just for today I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax. In this half hour sometimes I will think of the Tao so as to get a little more perspective into my life.
X. Just for today I will be unafraid, especially I will not be afraid to be happy, to enjoy what is beautiful, to love and to believe those I love, love me.
우리가 즐겁게 생각하고 즐겁게 행동하면 우리는 즐거워질 수 있다. 우리 스스로가 약하다고 생각하면 우리는 약해질 것이다. 우리 스스로가 강하다고 생각하면 우리는 강해질 것이다. 우리 모두는 우리 운명의 창조자인 것이다. 어제나 내일은 잠시 내려두고 우리가 ‘오늘만큼만’ 잘 하면, 오늘만큼만 최선을 다하면, 성공할 수 있고 또 행복해질 수 있다. 지나버린 과거는 돌이키기가 어렵고 내일 일은 불확실성 속에 있으므로, 단지 오늘만큼은 생의 마지막 날인 듯 생각하며, 모든 일에 최선을 다한다면 반드시 오늘만큼은 보람되고 행복해질 수 있을 것이다. 고대 그리스 시인 소포클레스가 “내가 헛되이한 오늘은, 어제 죽어간 이가 그렇게 처절하게 바라던 내일이다.’ 라고 하지 않았던가?
