Summary:
Paul tells Timothy that the Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome. Instead, he is to be kind to everyone, able to teach, and patient when he is wronged. When people oppose him, he should correct them gently. The reason is that God may grant them repentance, which leads them to know the truth. Then they may come to their senses and escape the devil's snare. The devil has held them captive to do his will.
Teaching:
The servant of God is a servant who proclaims the Word well. Being gentle and patient also serves the purpose of teaching the Word well. For this reason, he does not engage in quarrels, disputes, or arguments. To be gentle means to have strength, yet to restrain and control that strength and treat others kindly. It is humbling oneself in order to proclaim the Word well. God adds the power of His kingdom to such a person.
He is not drunk with wine, nor is he drunk with the world. The devil seeks to take hold of us through pleasure and greed. If we do not stay alert, we will simply be swept away. To stay alert, we must continually read and hear this Word, reflect on it and remember it, and pray in the Holy Spirit. Without the Word and the Spirit, no one can escape the snare of the devil.
A worker in the church must be held captive by God. Therefore, only those who are confirmed as belonging to the Lord, who can say, "I am the Lord's," should become servants of the Lord.
