Summary:
Paul warns Timothy that a time is coming when people won't put up with sound teaching. Wanting to hear what pleases them, they will gather teachers who suit their own desires. They will stop listening to the truth and turn to myths instead.
Timothy, however, is to stay clear-minded in everything. He is to endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fully carry out his ministry.
Teaching:
Regardless of position or office, all holy people of God must not forget that they are proclaimers. Jesus proclaimed to us the gospel of the cross, the cross on which He died. We heard that Word, received it, and were saved. So we owe God a debt of life worth more than any fortune. We proclaim this Word to repay that debt.
To receive the truth, we simply have to bow down and deny ourselves. Only when the Word we have heard pierces and cuts us can we truly receive the Word of truth.
"Fulfill your ministry" means we must keep filling our ministry with the work it calls for and carry it all the way through. When that work is full and overflowing, we bear fruit.
