아래는 제 글 "The Influence of Korean Traditional Worldview on Pluralism" 중에서 일부 인용한 글입니다.
Korea is the country that has long history of the oriental traditional religions. The Buddhist worldview has deep root in the soil of Korean culture as it had been the state religion in the ancient Korea for hundred years. The other religion, the Confucianism, is closer to an ethical philosophy than a religion and played a major role in forming Korean thought and shaping Korean worldview during the Yi-dynasty (1392-1910).
Comparing to the western modern epistemology, the subjective elements are conspicuous in the traditional Korean epistemology. Both Buddhism and Confucianism have been the source of subjectivism in Korean thinking. Buddhism is the system of religious philosophy that teaches one to reach the way to salvation[1] through self-awareness. Confucianism is a philosophy that has strong emphasis on filial piety as an ethical value. And these two had played a major role in shaping Korean traditional worldview. Traditionalism is still strong in Korean minds partially because the Korean society has been modernized without going through the process and ecperience of the Enlightenment as in the West. Thus, the Korean traditionalism and the western modernism have been interplayed in the Korea of twenty century..
In nineteenth century Korea was under different situation from Japan. While Koreans had their own traditional epistemology, Japan was an empty vessel. So to speak, until early nineteenth century Korean enjoyed advanced Oriental civilization and Japan was far behind Korea and China. But this disadvantage was advantage for Japan when opening to the Western civilization. There was no resistance in Japan against bringing in Western leanings. But Korean reformers faced fierce resistance from those who wanted to keep their traditional values and ways.
In modern Korea, everyone knows that it is silly to refuse Western civilization. On the contrary, now all Koreans admire Western learning and civilization. This fact is clearly seen from the example most Korean families eager to send their children to schools in North America. But subjectivism is still strong in the minds of Koreans. They are no longer scholars; they do longer retain the system of Oriental scholarship. Therefore, new Korean generation is in the boundary of traditional Oriental epistemology. Yet, they keep subjectivism in their minds and worldview. They are also in the boundary of Western modern epistemology. They have never been at the home of Western objectivism. They may be college-educated. But they simply memorized knowledge instead of being trained for objective thinking. This group of people one call the leftists in modern Korean society.
This observation explains why the leftists in Korean society are so hostile against President Park Jeong Hee.[2] It was President Park who developed Korea from poverty to abundance. There has been no leader like him who developed a nation from the poorest level to richer level within two decades. There has been no leader like him neither in Korea nor in the world. All his great achievement witnesses that he was a great leader. Many nations including China have sent students and researcher to learn his model of developing economy for developing countries. Why, then, the leftists in South Korea have been so hostile to him and even persecuted him? Their extreme subjectivism explains that. As a reformer President Park was a technocrat. In the age when there was only few scientists, he was a man of science. He was a Korean equipped with Western modern epistemology. Unlike other Korean Presidents, his economical policy was founded on scientific analysis. He possessed the minds and brain for both physical and social science. It was during President Park's presidency that Korean science and industry saw modernization in the real sense of the world.
Why, then, the Korean leftists stand against him? It is because their extreme subjectivism cannot match President Park's well balanced objectivism. They are subjectivists because they have never been trained for objective training. Their lack of objectivism is partially related to modern Korean history. The liberation of Korea in 1945 was a challenge for Korean education. Now, Koreans had their own school, but teachers and professors were not ready. In this situation, memorization became the tradition of education. If memorization is all for education, they are good students. But modern education requires more than that. It requires objective thinking. And the Korean leftists are those who lack this capacity in their brain. Comparing President Park, this explains the way Roh Moo-hyun rule the country. Even in his diplomatic he does not ask, "What is the objective fact?" He only claims, "This is what I think." Unlike President Park, he rules from his subjectivism.
Now, the main problem of the Korean leftism is their claim that going back to subjectivism and subjective rule is democracy. On the contrary, democracy demands objective thinking. Democracy feeds on objective epistemology. A glance at Western democracy demonstrates that liberal democracy has developed with the development of modern epistemology. And this explains why the environment for democracy could be provided during President's Park Jeong Hee's days. Now, the Korean leftists claim that going back to subjectivism and subjective rule is progressivism( or 진보) and democracy. But its contradiction is evident when they themselves do not have confidence if Roh Moo-hyun's rule from his subjective thinking is good and right.
