2	옛날, 어느 깊은 산골에 외딴집이 하나 있었어요.
	Once upon a time, there was a house, deep inside the woods away from a village.
	그 집에는 홀어머니와 오누이가 오순도순 살고 있었지요.
	There happily lived a mother, brother and sister.
	세 식구는 가난했지만 아주 행복했어요.
	They were really happy even though they were poor.
3	“엄마, 재미있는 이야기해 주세요.”
	“Mommy, please tell us a story.”
	“그래, 오늘은 무슨 이야기를 해줄까?”
	“Sure, what kind of story do you want?”
	오누이는 어머니가 들려 주는 이야기에 폭 빠져 밤이 깊어 가는 줄도 몰랐답니다.
	Children were awake until the story, which their mother told, finished.
4	하루는 어머니가 산 너머 잔칫집에 일을 하러 가게 되었어요.
	One day, mother had to work at a party, held across a mountain.
	“일이 끝나는 대로 돌아올 테니 엄마 올 때까지 문 꼭 걸어 잠그고 있어야 한다.”
	“I’ll be back as soon as work finishes, so lock the door until I come back.”
	“네, 엄마. 맛있는 떡 가져오셔야 해요!”
	“Yes, mom. Please bring delicious rice cakes!”
	“그래, 떡 많이 가지고 오마.”
	“Sure, I’ll bring plenty of them.”
7	어느덧 해가 지고 사방이 어둑어둑해졌어요.
	The sun had set and it got darker and darker.
	하지만 어머니는 밤늦도록 돌아오지 않았어요.
	However, mother didn’t come back till late at night.
	“오빠, 엄마가 왜 이렇게 안 오시지? 나 배고파.”
	“When does mommy come back? I’m hungry.”
	“응, 조금만 기다리면 엄마가 떡 가지고 오실 거야.”
	“Well, wait for a bit, then mommy will bring rice cakes to home.”
	아무리 기다려도 어머니가 돌아오지 않자, 오누이는 어머니 걱정에 점점 불안해지기 시작했어요.
	As mother didn’t come back, children became more and more anxious.
8	그 때 어머니는 잔칫집에서 얻은 떡을 머리에 이고 산고개를 넘고 있었어요.
	At that time, mother was going up the hill with rice cakes.
	떡을 보고 좋아할 오누이 생각에 발걸음이 더욱 빨라졌지요.
	She hurried because children were waiting for her.

9	그런데 어쩌면 좋아요!
	What should we do!
	고개를 넘자마자 무시무시한 호랑이 한 마리가 길 한가운데에 떡 버티고 있지 않겠어요?
	As soon as mother went down the hill, there was a big tiger in front of her!
10	“어흥, 배고픈데 잘 만났다!”
	“What a coincidence! I was very hungry!”
	“사, 살려주세요!”
	“Help!”
	어머니는 눈앞이 캄캄했어요.
	Mother felt so hopeless.
11	“떡 하나 주면 안 잡아먹지!”
	“Give me a rice cake or you will save your life!”
	어머니는 호랑이에게 얼른 떡을 주었어요.
	Mother gave a rice cake to Tiger right away.
	하지만 호랑이는 떡을 야금야금 다 빼앗아 먹고는 마침내 어머니까지 잡아먹고 말았어요.
	But Tiger ate all of the rice cakes and stole Mother’s life.
	그러고는 어머니의 옷을 입고 오누이가 있는 집으로 달려갔지요.
	Then, Tiger wore Mother’s clothes and ran to the house where children was waiting for their mother.
12	“엄마한테 무슨 일이 생긴 건 아닐까?”
	“What if something bad happened to mom?”
	어느덧 호랑이는 오누이가 있는 외딴집 방문 앞까지 와 있었어요.
	Tiger came right in front of the door of the room, where children were.
13	“얘들아, 엄마 왔다. 문 열어라!”호랑이가 능청스럽게 말했어요.
	“Hello, sweetie. I’m home. Open the door!”said Tiger, playing innocent.
	“우리 엄마 목소리가 아니에요!”오누이는 고개를 갸웃거리며 말했어요.
	“This is not my mother’s voice!”said children, doubting.
	“산을 넘어오다가 바람을 쐬어서 목이 쉬었단다.”
	“I have a sore throat because I felt a cold wind when I was going across the mountain.”
	“그럼 손 좀 보여 주세요.”
	“Let me see your hand, then.”
	그러자 호랑이는 털이 북슬북슬한 손을 쑤욱 들이밀었어요.
	Then, Tiger put the furry hand into the room.
15	“손에 웬 털이 이렇게 많고 까칠까칠해요?
	“Why is there so much fur on your hand?
	이건 우리 엄마 손이 아니에요!”
	This is not my mother’s hand!”

15	“일을 하도 많이 해서 그렇단다.”
	“It is because I worked so hard.”
	그런데 문틈으로 밖을 살짝 내다본 오누이는 그만 깜짝 놀랐어요.
	Children were so surprised when they saw outside through the door.
	무시무시한 호랑이가 와 있었기 때문이지요.
	That was because scary Tiger was there.
	오누이는 재빨리 뒤뜰로 도망쳤어요.
	Children ran toward the backyard.
16	오누이는 뒤뜰 우물가에 있는 커다란 나무 위로 허겁지겁 올라갔어요.
	They hurried to climb up the big tree near the well in their backyard.
	호랑이는 집 구석구석을 왔다 갔다 하며 오누이를 찾아다녔지요.
	Tiger searched for children, going everywhere in the house.
17	어느덧 우물가로 온 호랑이는 우물 안을 들여다보았어요.
	Then, Tiger looked inside the well when it came to the well.
	“오빠, 무서워!”
	“I’m scared.”
	“쉬잇!”
	“Shhh!”
	그런데 우물물에 오누이의 그림자가 비치고 말았어요.
	But, children’s shadow was reflected on the water in the well.
	호랑이는 천천히 고개를 들어 나무 위를 올려다보았지요.
	Tiger slowly held his up and looked up at the tree.
	“이 녀석들, 바로 거기 있었구나!”
	“You were there!”
	오누이는 그만 호랑이에게 들키고 말았답니다.
	Brother and sister were caught at Tiger’s sight.
19	“너희들, 어떻게 나무 위까지 올라갔니?”
	“How did you get up to the top of the tree?”
	“참기름 바르고 올라왔지.” 오빠가 꾀를 내어 대답했어요.
	“We put sesame oil to climb up the tree,” answered Brother, thinking out a trick.
	그러자 호랑이는 부엌에서 참기름 병을 가져다가 앞발과 뒷발에 골고루 발랐어요.
	Then, Tiger brought a bottle of sesame oil and put the oil all over its paws.
	호랑이는 허겁지겁 나무 위로 올라갔어요.
	Tiger went up the tree hastily.
	그러나 조금 기어오르다가는 쭈르르 미끄러져 땅바닥에 엉덩방아를 쿵 찧고 말았지요.
	But it soon slid down as it tried to climb up the tree and fell on its behind to the ground.
20	“아이고, 엉덩이야, 아이고!”
	“Ouch, my butt, ouch!”
	“에이, 바보, 도끼로 나무를 찍고 올라오면 되는데!”
	“Stupid tiger, you can use an axe to climb up the tree!”

20	동생이 엉덩이를 어루만지는 호랑이를 보고 깔깔대며 말했어요.
	said Sister, giggling at Tiger who was rubbing its butt.
	깜짝 놀란 오빠가 재빨리 동생의 입을 막았지만 이미 늦었지요.
	It was too late when surprised brother put his hand over sister’s mouth.
21	어느 새 도끼를 찾아 든 호랑이가 나무를 쿵쿵 찍으며 성큼성큼 올라오고 있었어요.
	Tiger was climbing up the tree with axe.
	“어쩌면 좋아!”
	“What should we do?”
	오누이는 눈을 꼭 감고 부둥켜안았어요.
	Children held themselves in arms with their eyes closed.
22	호랑이는 점점 더 가까이 다가오고 있었어요.
	Tiger was approaching closer and closer.
	바들바들 떨던 오누이는 두 손을 모아 빌기 시작했어요.
	Children, who were trembling, started to pray.
	“하느님, 제발 저희를 살려주세요!”
	“God, please save us!”
23	그 때, 놀랍게도 하늘에서 굵은 동아줄이 스르르 내려왔어요!
	Surprisingly, a thick rope came down from the sky!
	“하느님, 고맙습니다!”
	“Thanks, god!”
	오누이는 재빨리 동아줄을 타고 하늘로 올라갔지요.
	Children held the rope strongly and went up to the sky.
24	“아니, 저 녀석들이…….”
	“Oh, they are going up to the sky!”
	나무 위까지 올라온 호랑이는 동아줄을 타고 하늘로 올라가는 오누이를 바라보며 분해서 어쩔 줄을 몰랐어요.
	Tiger, who managed to climb up the tree, was angry as it looked at children going up to the sky with a rope.
25	‘옳거니, 나도 기도해야지.’
	‘A-ha, I should pray, too.’
	호랑이는 오누이처럼 하늘을 보며 빌기 시작했어요.
	Tiger started to pray, looking up the sky, just like what children did.
	“하느님, 저한테도 동아줄을 내려 주세요.”
	“God, please give me the rope, too.”
	그러자 정말 하늘에서 동아줄이 스스로 내려오지 않겠어요!
	Then, a rope came down from the sky!
26	“요 녀석들, 어디 두고 보자. 꼭 잡고 말 테다!”
	“I’ll catch you guys!”
	호랑이는 썩은 동아줄인 줄도 모르고 덥석 잡았어요.
	Tiger grabbed the rope, which was rotten.

26	아니나다를까.
	Just as expected.
	조금 뒤 동아줄이 툭 끊어지는 바람에 호랑이는 땅으로 떨어져 내렸어요.
	A moment later, the rope was cut and Tiger fell down to the ground.
27	“으아악, 호랑이 살려!”
	“Help!”
	수수밭으로 쿵 떨어진 호랑이는 그만 죽고 말았답니다.
	Tiger fell to the field of sorghum and died.
	수숫대가 빨간 것은 이 때 호랑이의 피가 묻었기 때문이래요.
	The reason why sorghum is red is that it was stained with Tiger’s blood at that time.
28	한 편, 하늘로 올라간 오빠는 해가 되고 동생은 달이 되었어요.
	Meanwhile, among children, who went up to the sky, brother became the sun and sister became the moon.
	하지만 동생은 밤에 다니기가 무섭다며 하느님께 해가 되게 해 달라고 했어요.
	However, sister pleaded to the god for her to be the sun since she was scared of night.
	그래서 동생이 해가 되고, 오빠가 달이 되었지요.
	Therefore, sister became the sun and brother became the moon.
29	우리가 해를 보면 눈이 부신 것은 부끄럼 많은 동생이 자기를 못 쳐다보게 빛을 뿜기 때문이랍니다.
	The reason why we are dazzled by sunlight is that shy sister radiates sunlight for people not to look at her.
