Roaring noon. In a well-fanned Forty-second Street cellar I met Gatsby for lunch. Blinking away the brightness of the street outside my eyes picked him out obscurely in the anteroom, talking to another man.

roaring : 으르렁거리는, 아우성치는 듯한. * Roaring Twenties : 광란의 20년대(대공황에 이르기 직전까지의 1920~1929년 시기에 충만했던 활기와 자신감, 또 물질적 부를 기반으로 한 흥청거리는 분위기를 가리킨다.)

광란의 20년대(狂亂의 20年代, Roaring Twenties)는 미국의 1920년대를 표현하는 용어이다. 제조업의 성장과 소비자 수요 증가로 예술, 문화 산업도 발전한 시대로 1차 세계 대전 후 재즈 음악이 번성하여 재즈 시대라 불리기도 한다. 아르데코가 정점을 맞았던 시기이다. 하지만, 1929년 검은 목요일을 기점으로 거품이 사그라들며 이 시대도 종말을 고하고 대공황의 시대에 접어들게 된다.

밝은 곳에서 어두운 곳으로 들어온다. 금주법이 시행되고 있던 때에 은밀히 술을 팔고 있던 곳으로 밝은 바깥의 거리와 대조되는 어둠이 있다.

cellar : great bridge(82:16) --> girder 아래(82:17) --> carriage들이 다니는 길(82:25) --> Balckwell’s Island(83:2) --> cellar(83:12) : 점점 낮아져서 지하로 내려온다.

- Carraway : ‘carried away’에서 만들어낸 것으로 보이는데 ‘(개츠비에게) 마음이 사로잡힌’ 인물임을 암시

A small, flat-nosed Jew raised his large head and regarded me with two fine growths of hair which luxuriated in either nostril. After a moment I discovered his tiny eyes in the half darkness.

luxuriated : If you luxuriate in something, you relax in it and enjoy it very much, especially because you find it comfortable and luxurious. (Cobuild 사전)

“—so I took one look at him,” said Mr. Wolfshiem, shaking my hand earnestly, “—and what do you think I did?”

- Wolfshiem : 아널드 로스틴(Arnold Rothstein)을 모델로 함.

아널드 로스틴(Arnold Rothstein, 1882~1928)은 미국의 범죄 조직원, 사업가, 겜블러(도박사)였습니다. 그는 조직 범죄의 현대적 모델을 만든 인물로 평가되며, 1919년 "블랙삭스 스캔들"이라 불리는 월드 시리즈 승부 조작 사건의 배후로도 알려져 있습니다.

“What?” I inquired politely.

But evidently he was not addressing me for he dropped my hand and covered Gatsby with his expressive nose.

1장에서 데이지는 톰의 집사의 코에 대해서 말한다.

“I handed the money to Katspaugh and I sid, ‘All right, Katspaugh, don’t pay him a penny till he shuts his mouth.’ He shut it then and there.”

Katspaugh : 앞잡이, 끄나풀을 뜻하는 cat’s paw를 가지고 말장난을 하고 있음. 혹은 Gatsby를 매우 거세게 발음하는 것 같기도 하다. 초고에는 Katspaugh가 아닌 Mark로 되어 있었다.

Gatsby took an arm of each of us and moved forward into the restaurant whereupon Mr. Wolfshiem swallowed a new sentence he was starting and lapsed into a somnambulatory abstraction.

“Highballs?” asked the head waiter.

highball : 하이볼(위스키 같은 독한 술에 소다수 등을 섞고 얼음을 넣은 음료). 금주법이 시행되고 있지만 술을 팔고 있다.

“This is a nice restaurant here,” said Mr. Wolfshiem looking at the Presbyterian nymphs on the ceiling.

금주법의 시기에 밀주를 파는 지하 술집에 금주를 교리화하는 장로교의 ‘님프들’(천사들이 아니라)이 천장화로 그려져 있다는 것. 천사들이라고 하지 않고 님프들이라고 해서 장로교의 금주 교의를 비웃고 있다. 천사들이 취해서 님프가 된 듯한 착각을 불러 일으킨다.

이곳이 교회의 모습으로 위장된 비밀 술집 speakeasy라고 볼 수 있다.

일부 술집은 교회의 모습으로 위장하여 운영되기도 했다. 당시 교회나 성당에서 종교적인 목적으로 와인을 사용하는 것은 허용되었기 때문에, 이를 악용해 가짜 교회를 세우거나 교회의 지하실에서 몰래 술을 제공하는 경우도 있었다.

“But I like across the street better!”

“Yes, highballs,” agreed Gatsby, and then to Mr. Wolfshiem: “It’s too hot over there.”

“Hot and small–yes,” said Mr. Wolfshiem, “but full of memories.”

“What place is that?” I asked.

“The old Metropole.”

old : <애정·경멸을 나타낼 때> 가련한, 그리운

Metropole Hotel

- old Metropole : 그리운 메트로폴. *메트로폴 호텔은 타임스 스퀘어 바로 근처의 43번가 147번지에 위치한 호텔로 방마다 수돗물이 공급되는 첫 호텔이었다. 유명인들이 투숙하곤 했던 이 호텔은 1912년 7월 16일 새벽, 뉴욕의 여러 곳에서 도박 업소를 운영하고 마권업자이기도 했던 허먼 로젠설(Herman Rosenthal)이 살해당하면서 더 유명해졌다.

“The old Metropole,” brooded Mr. Wolfshiem gloomily. “Filled with faces dead and gone. Filled with friends gone now forever. I can’t forget so long as I live the night they shot Rosy Rosenthal there. It was six of us at the table and Rosy had eat and drunk a lot all evening. When it was almost morning the waiter came up to him with a funny look and says somebody wants to speak to him outside. ‘All right,’ says Rosy and begins to get up and I pulled him down in his chair.

- Rosy Rosenthal : 초고에는 Jack Rose로 되어 있었다. 허먼 로젠탈(Herman Rosenthal) 살인사건을 그대로 서술하고 있다. 뉴욕의 소규모 도박업자이자 갬블러로, 경찰의 보호를 받기 위해 수익의 일부를 상납하던 중, 경찰의 과도한 요구에 불만을 품고 언론에 이를 폭로했다. 그는 뉴욕 월드(New York World) 신문과의 인터뷰에서 경찰 부패를 공개적으로 비난하였고, 특히 경찰 중위 찰스 베커(Charles Becker)를 지목했다.

1912년 7월 16일 새벽 2시경, 로젠탈은 타임스 스퀘어 근처의 호텔 메트로폴(Hotel Metropole) 앞에서 총격을 받아 사망했다. 이 사건은 대중과 언론의 큰 관심을 불러일으켰으며, 맨해튼 지방 검사였던 찰스 S. 휘트먼(Charles S. Whitman)은 로젠탈과의 인터뷰를 예정하고 있었기에, 이 살인이 베커의 지시에 의해 이루어졌다고 의심했다.

수사 결과, 베커 중위는 로젠탈의 살인을 지시한 혐의로 체포되어 재판에 넘겨졌다. 그와 함께, 실제로 살인을 실행한 것으로 알려진 '기프 더 블러드(Gyp the Blood)'라는 별명을 가진 해리 호로위츠(Harry Horowitz)와 그의 공범자들도 체포되었다. 이들은 모두 유죄 판결을 받아 사형에 처해졌다.

“ ‘Let the bastards come in here if they want you, Rosy, but don’t you, so help me, move outside this room.’

“It was four o’clock in the morning then, and if we’d of raised the blinds we’d of seen daylight.”

“Did he go?” I asked innocently.

이 살인사건은 당시에 굉장히 유명한 사건이었는데 닉은 이 사건을 모르고 있는 것처럼 ‘순진하게’ 물어보고 있다. 이런 태도는 울프심으로 하여금 분개하게 한다(indignantly).

“Sure he went,”–Mr. Wolfshiem’s nose flashed at me indignantly–”He turned around in the door and says, ‘Don’t let that waiter take away my coffee!’ Then he went out on the sidewalk and they shot him three times in his full belly and drove away.”

“Four of them were electrocuted,” I said, remembering.

“Five with Becker.” His nostrils turned to me in an interested way. “I understand you’re looking for a business gonnegtion.”

gonnegtion : connection의 k 발음을 g로 하고 있다. ‘연줄’을 뜻하는 이 말이 부드럽게 들리는 효과를 낸다. 자연스럽게 연결될 것 같은 이미지를 준다.

"gonnegtion"은 오타처럼 보이지만, 실제로는 마리오 푸조(Mario Puzo)의 소설 The Godfather (대부)와 그 영화에서 등장하는 표현입니다. 이 단어는 "connection"(연줄, 인맥)의 변형된 형태로, 비토 콜레오네 (Vito Corleone)나 그의 부하들이 이탈리아식 억양으로 발음하면서 나온 것입니다. 마피아 세계에서 "connections"는 범죄 조직과 정치, 사업 등 다양한 분야에서의 강력한 인맥을 의미합니다. 즉, "gonnegtion"은 마피아 조직과의 연줄이나 유력한 관계를 뜻하는 단어로 사용됩니다.

The juxtaposition of these two remarks was startling. Gatsby answered for me.

- juxtaposition of these two remarks : 두 가지는 business(사업)와 connection(연줄)를 가리킨다. 닉의 상식으로는 이 두 가지는 양립할 수 없는 것으로 생각되기 때문에 놀랐던 것이다. 닉은 순진해 보인다[innocently].

“Oh, no,” he exclaimed, “this isn’t the man!”

“No?” Mr. Wolfshiem seemed disappointed.

“This is just a friend. I told you we’d talk about that some other time.”

“I beg your pardon,” said Mr. Wolfshiem, “I had a wrong man.”

A succulent hash arrived, and Mr. Wolfshiem, forgetting the more sentimental atmosphere of the old Metropole, began to eat with ferocious delicacy. His eyes, meanwhile, roved very slowly all around the room–he completed the arc by turning to inspect the people directly behind. I think that, except for my presence, he would have taken one short glance beneath our own table.

hash : 해시(고기와 감자를 잘게 다져 섞어 요리하여 따뜻하게 차려 낸 것)

ferocious delicacy : 흉포한 섬세함. 피츠제럴드가 즐겨 사용하는 모순어법(oxymoron)의 하나. 울프심이 업무적으로 돈을 버는 일에 있어서는 매우 섬세하게 일을 진행하고, 방해가 되는 이들을 처리하는 데에는 잔인하게 한다는 암시를 볼 수 있다. 음식을 먹는 울프심의 모습은 늑대(wolf)를 닮았다.

“Look here, old sport,” said Gatsby, leaning toward me, “I’m afraid I made you a little angry this morning in the car.”

There was the smile again, but this time I held out against it.

“I don’t like mysteries,” I answered. “And I don’t understand why you won’t come out frankly and tell me what you want. Why has it all got to come through Miss Baker?”

“Oh, it’s nothing underhand,” he assured me. “Miss Baker’s a great sportswoman, you know, and she’d never do anything that wasn’t all right.”

베이커 양의 비리를 알고 있는 닉으로서는 개츠비의 이러한 평가가 어떻게 들렸을까?

Suddenly he looked at his watch, jumped up and hurried from the room leaving me with Mr. Wolfshiem at the table.

“He has to telephone,” said Mr. Wolfshiem, following him with his eyes. “Fine fellow, isn’t he? Handsome to look at and a perfect gentleman.”

“Yes.”

“He’s an Oggsford man.”

“Oh!”

“He went to Oggsford College in England. You know Oggsford College?”

“I’ve heard of it.”

“It’s one of the most famous colleges in the world.”

“Have you known Gatsby for a long time?” I inquired.

“Several years,” he answered in a gratified way. “I made the pleasure of his acquaintance just after the war. But I knew I had discovered a man of fine breeding after I talked with him an hour. I said to myself:

‘There’s the kind of man you’d like to take home and introduce to your mother and sister.’ “ He paused. “I see you’re looking at my cuff buttons.”

I hadn’t been looking at them, but I did now. They were composed of oddly familiar pieces of ivory.

“Finest specimens of human molars,” he informed me.

“Well!” I inspected them. “That’s a very interesting idea.”

“Yeah.” He flipped his sleeves up under his coat.

“Yeah, Gatsby’s very careful about women. He would never so much as look at a friend’s wife.”

When the subject of this instinctive trust returned to the table and sat down Mr. Wolfshiem drank his coffee with a jerk and got to his feet.

“I have enjoyed my lunch,” he said, “and I’m going to run off from you two young men before I outstay my welcome.”

- outstay my welcome : If you say that someone outstays their welcome infects or overstays their welcome, you mean that they stay somewhere longer than they are wanted or expected to.

“Don’t hurry, Meyer,” said Gatsby, without enthusiasm. Mr. Wolfshiem raised his hand in a sort of benediction.

“You’re very polite but I belong to another generation,” he announced solemnly. “You sit here and discuss your sports and your young ladies and your—-” He supplied an imaginary noun with another wave of his hand–”As for me, I am fifty years old, and I won’t impose myself on you any longer.”

As he shook hands and turned away his tragic nose was trembling. I wondered if I had said anything to offend him.

“He becomes very sentimental sometimes,” explained Gatsby. “This is one of his sentimental days.

He’s quite a character around New York—a denizen of Broadway.”

denizen : (특정 지역에서 사는[흔히 발견되는]) 사람[생물] (=inhabitant)

"denizen"은 영국 법에서 외국인이지만 일정한 권리를 부여받아 영국 내에서 거주할 수 있는 사람을 의미. 현대 영어에서는 "거주자", "주민", 또는 "어떤 특정한 장소에서 자주 발견되는 사람이나 동물"이라는 뜻으로 사용됨.

“Who is he anyhow–an actor?”

“No.”

“A dentist?”

“Meyer Wolfshiem? No, he’s a gambler.” Gatsby hesitated, then added coolly: “He’s the man who fixed the World’s Series back in 1919.”

fix: (결과를) 조작하다. * 1919년 월드시리즈는 9판 5선승제였는데, 시카고 화이트삭스(White Sox)팀의 여러 선수들이 도박사들과 결탁하여 신시내티 레즈(Cincinnati Reds)에 고의로 경기를 내주었다. 이 사건은 흔히 '블랙 삭스'(Black Sox) 스캔들이라 불리는데, 블랙삭스'라는 이름이 이 추문 때문에 생긴 명칭이라고 하지만 실은 인색하기 그지없는 구단주 찰스 커미스키(Charles Comiskey)가 선수들의 유니폼 세탁 비용을 선수들 개인에게 부과하려고 하자 선수들이 이 조치를 거부한 일과 관련이 있다는 설도 있다. 선수들이 유니폼을 세탁하지 않아 경기를 거듭할수록 유니폼이 점점 더 더러워져 블랙 삭스라는 말이 이미 있었다는 것이다. 울프심이라는 작중 캐릭터는 당시 이 조작 사건에 연루된 것으로 조사를 받았으나 증거 불충분으로 기소되지 못한 아널드 로스스타인(Arnold Rothstein, 1882~1928)이라는 실제 인 물을 바탕으로 한 것으로 여겨진다. 작중 사건들이 1922년을 배경으로 하고 있음을 기준으로 하면 울프샤임은 자신이 50세라고 밝히고 있는데, 실제 로스스타인의 나이는 1922년 당시 40세였을 것이다.

“Fixed the World’s Series?” I repeated.

The idea staggered me. I remembered of course that the World’s Series had been fixed in 1919 but if I had thought of it at all I would have thought of it as a thing that merely happened, the end of some inevitable chain. It never occurred to me that one man could start to play with the faith of fifty million people–with the single-mindedness of a burglar blowing a safe.
