Select the word that best completes the blank underlined.

2. Yet there are also valid arguments for punishing Holocaust denial. The Holocaust was a methodical effort to __________ an entire people; it plunged far deeper into the maelstrom of human depravity than anything before it.

3. Mr. John is __________ about his appearance. He never has a wrinkle in his clothes or a hair out of place.
(A) meticulous (B) fashionable (C) inquisitive (D) embellish
<정답> (A) meticulous [표제어 3255]

4. In addition to being a deadly disease, cancer is an expecially __________ one, often hiding in the body for years before it becomes apparent.
(A) tremendous (B) insidious (C) ostentatious (D) preposterous
<정답> (B) insidious [표제어 2915]
hiding in the body(몸속에 숨어 있는)가 단서이다.
Choose the most appropriate expression to fill in each blank.
17. However, painful as it may be to accept, freedom of speech is a(n) __________ proposition. You can't have freedom of speech for some people and not for others. If you ban unpopular people from speaking, you no longer have freedom of speech.

*어근 vent (=come)

[26-28]
(26) Sans red face, it has displayed naked hypocrisy. While the U.S., wearing its white hat, can condemn global bad guys like Saddam Hussein for not keeping their word, it flagrantly fails to make good on its own. Out Nation, in the person of Mary A. Ryan, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, who offered sworn testimony in Washington, D.C., on January 24, 2000, has spelled out in explicit, unequivocal detail its policy dictating the return of Elian. Is it all right because Cuba is communist and we don't have to be true to out word with our enemy? Is it no big deal because we are the superpower and there's no one who can make us honor it? Is it just old-fashioned to believe that the character of a nation really does matter?
So, what of national honor? Do we sit here and let it go down the drain? This is a time that surely will test our souls. For those who have been on the sidelines, not understanding what the fuss over this one child is all about; for those who still have doubts about where Elian should live; Doubt no more. For those who think Elian should stay here because he'll have a good future and who have been disagreeing with Mr. Gonzalez's demand for the return of his son, based on Cuba being communist; Disagree no more. Because the U.S. has spoken, that settles it once and for all.
26. The meaning of the underlined phrase in the passage is
(A) Without blushing (B) In anger (C) Out of shame (D) In full-blooded spirit
(A) Without blushing
sans prep.
Sans red face , it has displayed naked hypocrisy.
(c) Out of shamedptj shame은 부끄러움 보다는 수치에 가깝다.
[29-32]
It was the Angel in the House that used to come between me and my paper when I was writing reviews. You may not know what I mean by the Angel in the House. I will describe her as shortly as I can. She was intensely unselfish. She excelled in the difficult arts of family life. She sacrificed herself daily. She never had a mind or a wish of her own, but preferred to sympathize always with the minds and wishes of others. In those days--the last of Queen Victoria--every house had its Angel. When I took my pen in hand to review that novel by a famous man, she slipped behind me and whispered: "My dear, you are a young woman. You are writing about a book that has been written by a man. Be sympathetic; be tender; flatter; deceive; use all the arts and wiles of our sex. Never let anybody guess that you have a mind of your own." I turned upon her and caught her by the throat. I did my best to kill her. My excuse, if I were to be had up in a court of law, would be that I acted in self- defense. Had I not killed her she would have killed me. She would have plucked the heart out of my writing. Since then, whenever I felt the shadow of her wing or the radiance of her halo upon my page, I took up the inkpot and flung it at her. (31) She died hard. Her fictitious nature was of great assistance to her. It is far harder to kill a phantom than a reality.
31. The meaning of the underlined sentence in the passage is
(A) She died in a torturous pain.
(B) She suffered hardship in dying.
(C) I let her die in misery.
(D) I could not kill her easily.
(D) I could not kill her easily.
[38-40]
The second point is the more familiar one of the historian's need of imaginative understanding for the minds of the people with whom he is dealing, for the thought behind their acts: I say "imaginative understanding," not "sympathy," lest sympathy should be supposed to imply agreement. Take Burckhardt's censorious remark about the Thirty Years' War: "It is scandalous for a creed, no matter whether it is Catholic or Protestant, to place its salvation above the integrity of the nation." It was extremely difficult for a nineteenth-century liberal historian brought up to believe that it is right and praiseworthy to kill in defense of one's country, but wicked and wrong-headed to kill in defense of one's religion, to enter into the state of mind of those who fought the Thirty Years War. Much of what has been written in English-speaking countries in the last ten years about the Soviet Union, and in the Soviet Union about the English-speaking countries, has been (40) vitiated by this inability to achieve even the most elementary measure of imaginative understanding of what goes on in the mind of the other party.
40. Choose the answer that is closest in meaning to the underlined word in the passage.
(A) criticized (B) impaired (C) manifested (D) obscured
