“And there’s the humor of it” - Shakespeare and The Four Humors

William Shakespeare created characters that are among the richest and most humanly recognizable in all of literature.

Yet Shakespeare understood human personality in the terms available to his age—that of the now—discarded theory of the four bodily humors—blood, bile, melancholy, and phlegm.

These four humors were understood to define peoples’ physical and mental health, and determined their personality, as well.

The language of the four humors pervades Shakespeare's plays, and their influence is felt above all in a belief that emotional states are physically determined. Carried by the bloodstream, the four humors bred the core passions of anger, grief, hope, and fear—the emotions conveyed so powerfully in Shakespeare’s comedies and tragedies.


Today, neuroscientists recognize a connection between Shakespeare's age and our own in the common understanding that the emotions are based in biochemistry and that drugs can be used to alleviate mental suffering.




● humor라는 단어의 기원

humor 또는 humour는 14세기에 처음 영어에 등장합니다. 원래 “식물이나 동물에 흐르는 즙, 즉 체액”을 의미했습니다. 즙이라고 표현을 했지만 juice를 뜻합니다. 일종의 액체죠. 라틴어로 humor는 umor였습니다. 몸에 흐르는 액체라는 뜻이었어요.

하지만 humor가 ‘변덕’이라는 뜻이 있다는 걸 생각하면 크게 이상할 건 없어요. ‘변덕이 죽 끓듯 한다’는 우리말이 있는데, 몸에 흐르는 액체라니 얼마나 변화무쌍하겠습니까? 여하튼 humor의 기원은 이렇게 몸과 관련이 있답니다.


중세 서양인들은 인간의 몸을 구성하는 네 가지 액체가 있다고 봤습니다. 활력(blood), 냉담(phlegm), 성마름(choler), 우울(melancholy)이 그것들인데, 이런 성격들이 액체의 흐름이나 양에 따라 만들어진다고 봤죠.

요즘으로 치면, 건강심리학이라고 볼 수 있습니다.

여기에서 제일 흥미로운 게 우울입니다. 우울은 black bile의 양이 증가해서 발생하는 심리적 상태라고 봤는데, 이게 심해지면, 미치광이가 된다고 믿었죠.

그래서 서양사람들은 연극을 통해 이런 미치광이 문제를 다루었어요.

오늘날로 치면, 텔레비전 드라마에서 우울증 문제가 많이 등장한 것이나 마찬가지죠. 서양중세인들은 복수심인 욕정 때문에 미치광이가 발생한다고 생각해서, 이를 경계하는 연극을 상연하고 관람했던 것인데, 이게 또 일상생활의 재미이기도 했던 것이죠.

4체액설


히포크라테스는 엠페도클레스의 이론을 발전시키는 4체액설을 정리한 것으로 유명하다.

히포크라테스는 인간이 정액이나 자궁의 체액에서 탄생하고 자라나는 점을 근거로 이를 중요시했으며 따라서 액체가 생명의 근원일 것으로 여겼다.

그는 혈액(blood), 담즙(bile), 점액(phlegm) 그리고 물(water, 나중에 흑담즙을 언급)의 4가지 체액으로 인간의 병리를 설명하려하였다.

한편 네 종류중 서로 대칭되는 한 쌍의 체액이 전체적인 불균형을 야기해서 병이된다는 이러한 이론이 당시의 대칭과 균형의 원리를 탐구하던 피타고라스 학파의 영향을 받은 결과일 것으로 추측하는 경우도 있다.
