This year my grandma turns to be 85 years old

Even these days she's out in the field

To farm with her family

Grandma, Do not come out to the field anymore

You’d better stay at home

We’ll do all the farming

no no no My Boys

I really like touching the earth

That’s why I’ve come out in the field

I’d like to touch the earth in the field

Until my life expires

Grandma, touching the soil

How come it’s so good for you?

You‘ll realize too when you grow up

If you work in the field for a long, long time

You’ll find out why it’s such a good one

Living without touching the earth

Even for a day?

It's not worth living, I would say

If your learning grows riper

You‘ll come to know why it’s so good

Appreciation Review

To Grandma, earth is nature, the Earth, and life.

Grandma feels herself as earth, earth as herself, because she had been with the earth for a long, long time.

Her grandchildren never understand her.

They have no idea why soil is so good.

It seems that earth, they think, is just soil necessary for farming.

In this regard,

the earth their Grandma talks about and the soil her grandchildren talk about could have different meanings.

Grandma describes ‘working out to the field’ as ‘touching the earth.’

So, in English, Grandma's earth is translated into ‘earth,’ while her grandchildren’s soil is expressed as ‘soil.’

For this poem’s composition,

I see that the first stanza is written in narrative style, while the other stanzas are in conversational style.

Thus conversational texts are distinguished as italics.

Grandma has become the Earth

감상평

할머니에게 흙이란 자연이며 대지이며 생명입니다.

할머니는 흙과 오랫동안 함께 해왔기 때문에

흙이 곧 할머니 자신이며, 자신이 곧 흙이라고 느낍니다.

손자들은 그러한 할머니를 이해하지 못합니다.

흙이 뭐 그렇게 좋다는 것인지 전혀 깨닫지 못합니다.

손자들에게 흙이란 그저 농사를 짓는데 필요한 흙에 불과하기 때문입니다.

이런 면에서,

할머니가 얘기하는 흙과 손주들의 흙은 서로 다른 의미를 갖습니다.

할머니는 ‘밭에 나와 일하는 것’을 ‘흙을 만지다’로 표현합니다.

그래서 영어로 번역할 때도 할머니의 흙은 earth로,

손주들의 흙은 soil로 표현하였습니다.

시의 구성에 있어서도,

첫 번째 연은 서술체로 되어 있고

나머지는 모두 대화체로 되어 있어

대화체는 이탤릭체로 구분하였습니다.

요즘도 늘 밭에 나와

식구들과 같이 일하신다

할머니 이제 밭에 나오지 마시고

집에 계셔요

일은 우리가 할게요 하니

나는 흙 만지는 것이 좋아

밭에 나오는 거란다

나는 죽는 날까지

밭에 나와

흙 만지다가 죽을 거야 하신다

할머니, 흙 만지는 것이

그렇게도

좋아요? 하면

너희들도 어른이 되면 알게 된단다

밭일을 오래 하다 보면

절로 알게 된단다

하루라도 흙을 만지지 못하고 살면

사는 게 아니지

너희들의 공부가 더 여물어지면 너희들도 알게 될 거란다 하신다
