John 17 Commentary (2)
Now let’s look at what the Lord prayed in John 17.
First, He prayed, “Glorify the Son” (John 17:1-5).
“Father, the hour has come; Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.” (verse 1)
The Lord prays through himself, “Hallowed be your name.”
The Lord reveals himself in us, which becomes His glory, and for us,
Christ appears in us, which becomes our glory.
The Lord is the only begotten Son of God, so He reveals God’s glory, and we receive from him, so we see God’s glory.
However, if you believe in Jesus outside and do not believe in the work of Christ in you, you cannot see this glory.
This giving and receiving between the Lord and us is the principle of faith.
This is the work of the Lord and ours.
God’s method of salvation is mixing.
The Lord and us become one in the anointing.
That is why we become God’s inheritance, and God becomes our inheritance.
We sing, ‘My eternal inheritance.’
But if we eat the Word and do not do this, we become an inactive person.
Since the glory of the Father dwells in us, we are glorified, and ultimately God is glorified through that achievement.
When we hear the Word of the Lord and fulfill the Beatitudes, becoming the salt and light of the world, God is glorified.
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16)
Next, let’s look at John 17:2.
“For the Father has given authority over all people to the Son so that he can grant eternal life to all those whom the Father has given him.”
“All those whom the Father has given the Son” are the Lord’s disciples who follow the Lord and learn from the Lord (Luke 14:25-35)
God gave Christ the authority to rule over all flesh (all mankind) so that he could grant eternal life to those who follow the Lord.
When a human being of flesh gains eternal life, he becomes the Lord’s disciple.
From that time, advanced learning that becomes the nature of heaven takes place in the Lord’s school.
Therefore, the prayer of surrender, “Your kingdom come” (Matthew 6:10), that is, “Rule over me,” comes out naturally.
Next, John 17:3 is an explanation of eternal life.
Eternal life literally means endless, infinite life.
However, eternal life is first to know (ginoskosin) the one true (real, factual) God.
The word ‘only’ means ‘only one’ among many gods.
It means that there are many potential husbands among men, but my husband is ‘only one (only)’.
And God is true and real. It is not imagination or fiction.
Therefore, we must receive revelation and repeat the training of piety by hearing and following the words of Christ until the invisible metaphysical spirit of God becomes real through faith.
Then eternal life is to know that God sent Jesus Christ.
When the Spirit of truth comes in us and the triune God is connected like a ladder, we know eternal life.
Then, in verse 4, "Father, I have glorified you on earth"
If we compare the words "glorifying you on earth" and the words in the Lord’s Prayer, "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven," they are in the same context.
Since the Lord has done God’s will, we who receive the Lord can fulfill God’s will through the Lord.
Therefore, we pray today, Father, let your will be done in me as it is in heaven.
We have ‘peace’ when we are in the Lord Jesus Christ, and we have ‘victory’ when we work with the Lord (John 16:33)
We have peace by faith, and we have victory by working with the Lord.
Since working is the fulfillment of God’s will, the joy of the Lord is filled in us.
The work that has been given to me to do’ (verse 4) refers to the work that God has told him to do.
Just as the Lord has completed the work of God, we are accomplishing that work through the Lord.
And in verse 5, “Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory that I had with you before the world began.”
Here, the time of ‘now’ refers to a time that neither the Son nor the angels know.
Then, the glory of the Lord before the world was created refers to the glory that Jesus Christ had before the world existed.
Even if the world does not acknowledge it, the Lord already had glory before that.
The Lord came in the flesh and returned to that state of glory.
He returned because he had finished the work of the apostle who carried out all the work of God the Father.
So, he returned to glorify the Father by glorifying the Son, in other words, he returned to the glory that gave him authority to give eternal life to all people.
The Lord came to this world as the kingdom of God, which grants the authority of God's children and has the authority to rule over all things, and now that He has completed His work, He returns to His original glory.
After completing this work, He becomes our bread of life, and this work also glorifies him in us, and we also glorify him with his glory and give glory to God the Father.
Therefore, faith that Christ becomes life in us (2 Corinthians 13:5, John 5:12) is the basis of eternal life, and from that, we eat Christ, the bread of life, every day and every hour, and we reach glory and become glorified with his glory.
Because of this, the joy of the Lord is filled in us and becomes our joy, and this salvation becomes the glory of God the Father.
This is how the Father's name is hallowed through us, and the Father's will is done in us, giving glory to the Father.
