The sea, feeling uncomfortable
about the scorching August sun,
has thickly put dark jade-blue sun-cream
here and there on its face.
Sorok Island, weighed down by green woods
shaped like a turtle-back, prostrates itself
flat and long on the golden sands;
Black stones dotting the sands leisurely share
afternoon sweetnothings in a whisper
with the sea-waves breaking against them.
Endless parade of small and big cars of various colors
moves along the long back of the Bridge
that dips its red legs in the sea like a king-crab does.
The wretched souls who finished
their lives locked up in this island!
They might have visited this place
out of their curiosity for this huge project
that connects this island to the mainland.
They died cursing their fate.
Only if they had tried to leave behind
their bitter resentment
by carving it with their disfigured fingernails
somewhere in this island,
the entire island must have disappeared
cut and slashed by their fingernails;
Only if their wails had been left behind as echoes,
the heart-rending sound must have torn it to pieces.
And yet the existence of such a wonderful paradise
seems to prove that the revengeful spirits
have carried all their resentment to the otherworld.
Perhaps souls cannot come back to the world,
and can do nothing bad to it, once they leave it,
no matter how bitter resentmnet they might have.
They died believing the now curable disease
to be the God's punishement that had no cure,
bitterly cursing their miserable fate;
Their only sin, if any,
was that they'd been born earlier than us.
Alas,
the woeful years, never-ending years
that chained them to their preposterous fate
though born in such a wonderful world!
Oh, revengeful souls,
God bless you in your next life!
