벤야민 지파와 다른 지파들의 전쟁

Assembly of Israelites

1 그리하여 이스라엘 자손들이 모두 나섰다. 단에서 브에르 세바에 이르기까지, 그리고 길앗 땅에서도 온 공동체가 일제히 미츠파로 주님 앞에 모여들었다.

So all the Israelites came out as one, from Dan to Beer-sheba including the land of Gilead, and the assembly gathered to the LORD at Mizpah.

2 온 백성 곧 이스라엘 모든 지파의 수장들도 칼로 무장한 보병 사십만 명으로 이루어진 하느님 백성의 회중 가운데에 자리를 잡았다.

The leaders of all the people, all the staff-bearers of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God - four hundred thousand foot soldiers who carried swords.

3 벤야민의 자손들은 이스라엘  자손들이 미츠파로 올라왔다는 소식을 들었다.

   그때에 이스라엘 자손들이, "이런 악행이 어떻게 일어났는지 말해 보시오." 하였다.

Meanwhile, the Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites asked, "How did this evil thing happen?"

4 살해된 여자의 남편인 그 레위인이 대답하였다. "저는 저의 소실과 함께 하룻밤을 묵으려고 벤야민 지파에 속한 기브아로 갔습니다.

and the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, testified: "It was at Giveah of Benjamin, which my concubine and I had entered for the night. 

5 그런데 그날 밤에 기브아의 지주들이 저를 해치려고 나서서, 제가 들어간 집을 둘러쌌습니다. 저를 죽이려고 생각하였던 것입니다. 그러다가 제 소실을 욕보여 죽게 만들었습니다.

The lords of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded me in the house at night. I was the one they intended to kill, but they abused my concubine and she died. 

6 그래서 제가 저의 소실을 붙들어 토막을 낸 다음, 이스라엘 상속지 곳곳으로 보냈습니다. 그들이 이스라엘에서 부정하고 추잡한 짓을 저질렀기 때문입니다.

So I took my concubine and cut her up and sent her through every part of the territory of Israel, because of the terrible thing they had done in Israel.

7 자, 이스라엘 자손 여러분! 여러분 모두 여기에서 토론하고 의논하여 보십시오."

So now, all you Israelites, give your judgement and counsel in this matter."

8 그러자 온 백성이 일제히 일어나 말하였다. "아무도 자기 천막으로 가서는 안 된다. 아무도 자기 집으로 돌아가서는 안 된다.

All the people rose as one to say, "None of us will leave for our tents or return to our homes.

9 이제 우리가 기브아에 할 일은 이러하다. 제비를 뽑아 그곳을 치러 올라가자.

Now as for Gibeah, this is what we will do: We will go up against it by lot,

10 이스라엘의 모든 지파에서 백 명마다 열 명을, 천 명마다 백 명을, 만 명마다 천 명을 뽑자. 그래서 벤야민 땅 기브아 사람들이 이스라엘에서 저지를 그 모든 추잡한 짓에 따라 그들을 응징하러 가는 군사들이 먹을 양식을 가져오게 하자."

taking form all the tribes of Israel ten men for every hundred, a hundred for every thousand, a thousand for every ten thousand, and procuring supplies for the soldiers who will go to exact from Gibeah of Benjamin the full measure of the terrible thing it committed in Israel"

11 그리하여 이스라엘의 모든 사람이 하나로 뭉쳐서 그 성읍으로 모여들었다. 

So all the men of Israel gathered against the city, united as one.

12 이스라엘의 지파들이 온 벤야민 지파로 사람들을 보내어 말하였다. "그대들 사이에서 일어난 이 악행은 어찌 된 것인가?

The tribes of Israel sent men thoughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, "What is this evil that has occurred among you?"

13 이제 기브아에 있는 그 불량한 사람들을 넘겨서, 우리가 그자들을 죽여 이스라엘에서 악을 치워 버리게 하여라." 그러나 벤야민의 자손들은 자기들의 동족인 이스라엘 자손들의 말을 들으려 하지 않았다.

Now give up the men, the scoundrels who are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and thus purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjaminites refused to listen to their kindred, the Israelites.

14 그리하여 벤야민의 자손들은 이스라엘 자손들과 싸우러 나가려고, 살던 성읍들을 떠나 기브아로 모여들었다.

Instead, the Benjaminites assembled from their cities at Gibeah, to march out to battle with the Israelites.

15 그날에 자기들이 살던 성읍을 떠나 사열을 받은 벤야민의 자손들은, 기브아 주민들 외에, 칼로 무장한 사람이 이만 육천 명이었다.

On that day the Benjaminites mustered from their cities twenty-six thousand swords-men, in addition to the inhabitants of Gibeah, 

16 이 무리 가운데에는 왼손잡이 정병 칠백 명이 있었다. 그들은 모두 머리키락 하나 빗나가지 않게 맞히는 돌팔매꾼이었다.

who mustered seven hundred picked men who were left-handed, every one of them able to sling a stone at a hair without missing.

17 이스라엘 사람들도 벤야민 지파를 빼고 사열을 받으니, 칼로 무장한 사람이 사십만 명이었는데, 그들은 모두 전사들이었다.

The men of Israel, without Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen, all of them warriors. 

18 이 이스라엘 자손들은 일어나 베텔로 올라가서 하느님께 여쭈어 보았다. "저희 가운데 누가 먼저 올라가서 벤야민의 자손들과 싸워야 합니까?" 그러자 주님께서 "유다가 먼저 가거라." 하고 대답하셨다.

They went up to Bethel and consulted God. When the Israelites asked, "Who shall go up first for us to do battle with the Benjaminites?" the LORD said: Judah first. 

19 다음날 아침에 이스라엘 자손들은 일어나 기브아로 가서 진을 쳤다. 

The Israelites rose in the morning and encamped against Gibeah.
