[밀부르가]

4 그래서 내가 그대에게 이 소식을 알리고 이렇게 말하리라고 생각하였네. '여기 앉아계신 분들과 내 겨레의 원로들 앞에서 그것을 사들이게. 그대가 구원 의무를 실행하려면 그렇게 하게. 그러나 그 의무를 실행하지 않으려면 나에게 알려주게. 구원 의무를 실행할 사람은 그대밖에 없고, 그대 다음은 나라는 것을 알고 있네.' 그러자 그는 "내가 구원 의무를 실행하겠네." 하고 대답하였다.

So I thought I would inform you. Before those here present, including the elders of my people, purchase the field; act as redeemer. But if you do not want to do it, tell me so, that I may know, for no one has a right of redemption prior to yours, and mine is next." He answered, "I will act as redeemer."

5 보아즈가 다시 "나오미에게서 그 밭을 사들이는 날에 그대는 고인의 아내인 모압 여자 룻도 맞아들여, 고인의 이름을 그의 소유지 위에 세워주어야 하네." 하고 말하였다.

Boaz continued, "When you acquire the field from Naomi, you also acquire responsibility for Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the late heir, to raise up a family for the deceased on his estate."

6 그러자 그 구원자가 대답하였다. "그렇다면 나로서는 구원 의무를 실행할 수 없네. 내 재산을 망치고 싶지는 않다네. 나는 구원 의무를 실행할 수 없으니 내 구원자 의무를 그대가 실행하게."

The redeemer replied, "I cannot exercise my right of redemption for that would endanger my own estate. You do it in my place, for I cannot."

7 옛날 이스라엘에는 구원하거나 교환할 때, 무슨 일이든 확정짓기 위하여 자기 신을 벗어서 상대편에게 주는 관습이 있었는데, 이것이 이스라엘에서는 증거로 통하였다.

Now it used to be the custom in Israel that, to make binding a contract of redemption or exchange, one party would take off a sandal and give it to the other. This was the form of attestation in Israel.

8 그 구원자는 보아즈에게 "자네가 사들이게." 하며 자기 신을 벗어서 건네주었다. 

So the other redeemer, in saying to Boaz, "Acquire it for yourself," drew off his sandal.
