1. Killing living beings leads to a short life.

1. 살생하면 수명이 짧아진다.

If a person cruelly kills living beings without compassion, the result of that karma may lead to a short life even when the person is reborn as a human being.

살아 있는 생명을 잔인하게 죽이고 자비를 베풀지 않으면, 그 업의 과보로 사람으로 태어나더라도 수명이 짧아진다.

2. Protecting living beings leads to a long life.

2. 살생하지 않고 생명을 보호하면 오래 산다.

If a person lays down the rod and the knife, feels compassion for all living beings, and protects them, the result of that wholesome karma leads to a long life.

몽둥이와 칼을 내려놓고 모든 생명을 불쌍히 여기며 보호하면, 그 선업의 과보로 오래 살게 된다.

3. Hurting and tormenting living beings leads to illness.

3. 생명을 때리고 괴롭히면 병이 많아진다.

If a person causes injury and suffering to living beings with their hands, stones, sticks, knives, or other means, the result of that karma leads to a sickly and unhealthy body.

손이나 돌, 몽둥이, 칼 등으로 살아 있는 존재에게 상처와 고통을 주면, 그 업의 과보로 병약한 몸을 받게 된다.

4. Refraining from harming living beings leads to good health.

4. 생명을 해치지 않으면 건강해진다.

If a person does not strike, torment, or harm living beings and instead allows them to live in peace, the result of that wholesome karma leads to a healthy body.

살아 있는 존재를 때리거나 괴롭히지 않고 편안하게 해주면, 그 선업의 과보로 건강한 몸을 받게 된다.

5. Frequent anger and resentment lead to an unattractive appearance.

5. 화를 잘 내고 원한을 품으면 용모가 추해진다.

If a person becomes angry over small matters and continues to harbor hatred and resentment, the result of that karma leads to an unfavorable appearance.

작은 말을 듣고도 분노하며 미움과 원망을 오래 품으면, 그 업의 과보로 좋지 않은 용모를 받게 된다.

6. Patience and gentleness lead to a beautiful appearance.

6. 화를 참으며 온화하게 대하면 용모가 아름다워진다.

If a person does not easily become angry even after hearing unpleasant words, but maintains a compassionate and gentle heart, the result of that wholesome karma leads to a beautiful appearance.

좋지 않은 말을 들어도 쉽게 성내지 않고 자비롭고 온화한 마음을 지니면, 그 선업의 과보로 아름다운 용모를 받게 된다.

7. Envy and jealousy lead to a loss of influence.

7. 남을 시기하고 질투하면 힘과 영향력을 잃는다.

If a person envies and obstructs others when they gain wealth, honor, and respect, the result of that karma leads to a lack of respect and influence.

남이 재물과 명예와 존경을 얻는 것을 시기하고 방해하면, 그 업의 과보로 다른 사람에게 존중받지 못하고 영향력이 약해진다.

8. Rejoicing in the success of others leads to greater influence.

8. 남이 잘되는 것을 기뻐하면 힘과 영향력이 커진다.

If a person sincerely rejoices in the success and respect received by others without jealousy, the result of that wholesome karma leads to trust, respect, and influence.

다른 사람이 성공하고 존경받는 것을 함께 기뻐하며 질투하지 않으면, 그 선업의 과보로 존중과 신뢰를 받는 사람이 된다.

9. Stinginess and a refusal to give lead to poverty.

9. 베풀지 않고 인색하면 가난해진다.

If a person has the ability to share food, clothing, shelter, and other necessities but refuses to give because of stinginess, the result of that karma leads to poverty.

음식·의복·거처 등 필요한 것을 나눌 수 있으면서도 인색하게 베풀지 않으면, 그 업의 과보로 가난하게 된다.

10. Generosity and giving lead to prosperity.

10. 기꺼이 나누고 보시하면 부유해진다.

If a person willingly offers food, clothing, shelter, lamps, and other necessities to people in need and to spiritual practitioners, the result of that wholesome karma leads to prosperity and abundance.

음식·의복·거처·등불과 필요한 물건을 어려운 사람과 수행자에게 기꺼이 베풀면, 그 선업의 과보로 풍요로워진다.

11. Arrogance and disrespect lead to birth in difficult circumstances.

11. 교만하여 남을 업신여기면 낮고 어려운 환경에 태어난다.

If a person refuses to honor those worthy of respect, does not offer a seat when appropriate, exalts oneself, and looks down upon others, that person is born into low and difficult circumstances.

공경해야 할 사람을 공경하지 않고, 자리를 양보해야 할 때 양보하지 않으며, 자신을 높이고 남을 업신여기면 낮고 어려운 환경에 태어난다.

12. Humility and respect lead to birth in favorable circumstances.

12. 겸손하고 공경하면 귀하고 좋은 환경에 태어난다.

If a person honors those worthy of respect, respects elders, offers one’s seat, and treats others with courtesy, that person is born into favorable circumstances and receives the respect of others.

존경할 사람을 존경하고, 어른을 공경하며, 자리를 양보하고 예의를 다하면 존중받는 좋은 환경에 태어난다.

13. Refusing to ask about or learn good and evil leads to foolishness.

13. 선악을 묻거나 배우지 않으면 어리석어진다.

If a person does not ask the wise, “What is good and what is evil? What should I practice to attain happiness, and what should I abandon?” and makes no effort to learn, that person becomes deficient in wisdom.

“무엇이 선하고 무엇이 악한가, 무엇을 행해야 행복하고 무엇을 버려야 하는가?”를 현명한 이에게 묻지 않고 배우려 하지 않으면 지혜가 부족해진다.

14. Asking, learning, and practicing the right path lead to wisdom.

14. 선악을 묻고 배우며 실천하면 지혜로워진다.

If a person seeks wise and virtuous teachers, asks them about good and evil and the proper way of life, reflects deeply upon their teachings, and puts them into practice, that person becomes wise.

선지식과 수행자를 찾아가 선악과 바른 삶의 길을 묻고, 배운 가르침을 깊이 생각하여 실천하면 지혜로운 사람이 된다.

성냄을 버리면 아름다워지고, 질투를 버리면 존중받는다.

Generosity brings abundance, humility brings honor, and asking about, learning, and practicing the right teachings bring wisdom.

베풀면 풍요로워지고, 겸손하면 귀해지며, 바른 가르침을 묻고 배우며 실천하면 지혜로워진다.
