여호사팟이 유다의 임금이 되다

Jehoshaphat's Zeal for the Law

1  아사의 아들 여호사팟이 그 뒤를 이어 임금이 되었다. 여호사팟은 이스라엘에 맞서 자신을 튼튼하게 하였다.

    His son Jehoshaphat succeeded him as king and strengthened his position against Israel.

2  그는 유다의 모든 요새 성읍에 군대를 배치하고, 유다 땅과, 자기 아버지 아사가 점령한 에프라임의 성읍들에 수비대를 두었다.

    He placed armed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim which Asa his father had taken.

3  여호사팟이 자기 조상 다윗이 처음에 걷던 길을 따라 걷고 바알을 찾지 않았으므로, 주님께서는 그와 함께 계셨다.

    The LORD was with Jehoshaphat, for he walked in the earlier ways of David his father, and did not seek the Baals.

4  그는 자기 아버지의 하느님을 찾고 그분의 계명에 따라 걸였으며, 이스라엘의 행동을 따르지 않았던 것이다.

    Rather, he sought the God of his father and walked in his commands, and not the practices of Israel.

5  그리하여 주님께서는 그의 손에서 나라를 튼튼하게 해 조셨다. 온 유다가 여호사팟에게 선물을 마치니, 그의 부와 영광이 대단하였다.

   Through him, the LORD made the kingdom secure, and all Judah gave Jehoshaphat gifts, so that great wealth and glory was his.

6  그는 용기를 내어 주님의 길을 걸으며 산당들과 아세라 목상들을 유다에서 없애버렸다.

    Thus he was encouraged to follow the LORD's ways, and once again he removed the high places and the asherahs from Judah.

7  그는 임금이 된 지 삼년째 되던 해에 대신들, 곧 벤 하일, 오바드야, 즈카르야, 느탄엘, 미키야를 유다 성읍들에 보내어 백성을 가르치게 하였다.

   In the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.

8  또 그들과 함께 레위인들, 곧 스마야, 느탄야, 즈바드야, 아사엘, 스미라못, 요나탄, 아도니야, 토비야, 톱 아도니야를 엘리사마 사제와 여호람 사제와 더불어 보냈다.

   With them he sent the Levites Shemaniah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, and Tobihah, together with Elishama and Jehoram the priests.

9  그들은 주님의 율법서를 가지고 유다에서 백성을 가르쳤다. 유다의 모든 성읍을 돌며 백성들을 가르친 것이다.

    They taught in Judah, having with them the book of  the law of the Lord; they traveled through all the cities of Judah and taught among the people.
