Revelation 3:1~6 – The background, history and meaning of the church in Sardis that existed at AD 27~100
○ The name of 'Sardis' means 'those that remain' or 'traces that remain' or 'those who remain'. It means that (1) there is little to remember, (2) it is alive but almost dead, and (3) they do not finish what they started and pay attention to the formal image rather than the substance.
○ History of Sardis - Sardis was the capital of the ancient Lydian Empire from BC 1200~BC 546. Then, in BC 546, it became a dependency of the Persian Empire (BC 691~BC 330), and in BC 133, it became a dependency of the Imperial Roman Empire (BC 27~AD 394), and it was in ruins due to frequent earthquakes and invasions by Turks and Mongols.
○ History of Anatolia - The place where present-day Turkey is located has long been called Anatolia. Anatolia means 'the place where the sun rises' or 'the East'. It is now Manisa Province, near the town of Sart. In 1914, a team of Princeton University began excavation, and its work is still ongoing.
○ Militarily, because all of the forts of Sardis except for the south were built on a plateau surrounded by rock walls as cliffs, forming an impregnable natural fortress, they thought it was safe and they neglected their vigilance. As a result, they were conquered twice by enemies. Since then, from the point of view of Christian history, the Reformation in the early 16th century(1,517) had been counterattacked by the Holy See in the 17th~18th century for the same reason.
○ The church of Sardis was established by John the Apostle (AD 6~100), and it existed from AD 27 to 100. According to Menologion in Greek, Clement (Philippians 4:3) was the first bishop of the church in Sardis, who was a disciple of Paul the Apostle (AD 5~68) and one of the Seventy (Luke 10:1, 10:17) as 70 disciples of Jesus Christ.
○ In the 2nd century, Melito, who died in c.180, became the bishop of the church in Sardis, and he gained a great fame and reputation, but the church in Sardis fell into complacency and formalism due to the economic stability and national peace.
