지혜 11, 1~20

[밀부르가]

1  지혜는 거룩한 예언자를 통하여 그들이 하는 일을 성공으로 이끌었습니다.

    She prospered their affairs through the holy prophet.

2  그들은 사람이 살지 않는 광야를 건너 인적 없는 곳에 천막을 쳤습니다.

Special Providence of God During the Exodus

Intoduction

    They journeyed through the uninhabited desert,

    and in lonely palces they pitched their tents;

3  그들은 적들과 맞서고 원수들을 물리쳤습니다.

    they withstood enemies and warded off their foes.

4  목마른 그들이 당신께 간청하자

    깎아지른 듯한 바위에서 물이, 

    단단한 돌에서 목마름을 풀어 주는 것이 나왔습니다.

    when they thirsted, they called upon you,

    and water was given them from the sheer rock,

    a quenching of their thirst from the hard stone.

나일 강의 물과 바위에서 나온 물

5  이렇게 그들의 원수들에게는 징벌의 도구가 되었던 바로 그것이

    곤경에 빠진 그들에게는 득이 되었습니다.

    For by the things through which their foes were punished

    they in their need were benefited.

6  샘물처럼 끊임없이 흐르던 강물이 피와 뒤엉켜 더럽혀지니

 First Example: Water Punishes the Egyptians and Benefits the Israelites   

    Instead of a river's perennial source,

7  아기들을 죽이라는 명령에 대한 벌이었습니다.

    그러나 그들에게는 뜻밖에도 물을 넉넉히 주셨습니다.

    as a rebuke to the decree for the slaying of infants,

    You gave them abundant water beyond their hope,

8  그때에 그들은 목마름을 겪고

    당신께서 적대자들을 어떻게 징벌하셨는지 알게 되었습니다.

    after you had shown by the thirst they experienced

    how you punished their adversaries.

9  자비의 징계이기는 하지만 그들은 그 시련을 받으면서

    진노의 심판을 받는 악인들이 얼마나 큰 고통을 겪었는지 깨달았습니다.

    For when they had been tried, though only mildly chastised, 

    they recognized how the wicked, condemed in anger,

    were being tormented.

10  당신께서는 자식들을 훈계하는 아버지처럼 그들을 시험하셨지만

      저들은 사람을 단죄하는 엄격한 임금처럼 철저히 조사하셨습니다.

      You tested your own people, admonishing them as a father;

      but as a stern king you probed and condemned the wicked.

11  저들은 그들이 떠나고 없을 때에도 있을 때와 마찬가지로 괴로움을 겪었으니

      Those near and far were equally afflicted;

12  지난 일들을 생각하며 쏟아 내는 탄식과 함께

      이중의 슬픔에 휩싸였기 때문입니다.

      for a twofold grief took hold of them

      and a groaning at the remenbrance of the ones who had departed.

13  저들은 바로 자기들이 받는 징벌로

      그들이 득을 보았다는 것을 듣고

      주님의 손길을 느꼈습니다.

      For when they geard that the cause of their won torments

      was a benefit to these others, they recognized the Lord.

14  또 오래전에 내버려진 그를 조롱하며 물리쳤지만

      일이 일어난 다음에는 그에게 경탄하지 않을 수 없었습니다.

      저들은 의인들과 다른 방식으로 목마름을 느꼈던 것입니다.

      For though they had mocked and frjected him who had been cast out and abandoned long ago,

      in the final outcome, they marveled at him,

      since their thirst proved unlike that of the righteous.

이집트인들에게 내린 하느님의 신중한 징벌

Second Example: Animals Punish the Egyptians and Benefit the Israelites

15  바른 길에서

      지각없는 길짐승들과 볼품없는 벌레들을 숭배하게 한

      저들의 미련하고 불의한 생각에 대하여

      당신께서는 벌을 내리시려고 지각없는 생물들을 떼 지어 보내셨습니다.

      In return for their senseless, wicked thoughts,

      which misled them into worshiping dumb serpents and worthless insects,

      You sent upon them swarms of dumb creatures for vengeance;

16  사람이 죄를 지은 바로 그것들로

      징벌도 받는다는 사실을 깨닫게 하시려는 것이었습니다.

      that they might recognize that one is punished by the very things through which one sins.

17  당신의 전능하신 손,

      무형의 물질로 세상을 창조하신 그 손이

      곰의 무리나 사나운 사자들을 보내는 것은 어려운 일이 아니었습니다.

Digression on God's Mercy

      For not without means was your almighty hand, 

      that had fashioned the universe from formless matter,

      to send upon them many bears or fierce lions,    

18  새로 창조되어 알려지지 않은 포악한 야수들도,

      입김 대신에 불을 뿜어 대는 야수들도,

      악취 가득한 연기를 내뿜는 야수들도,

      눈에서 무서운 불꽃을 내쏘는 야수들도 보내실 수 있었습니다.

      Or newly crated, wrathful, unknown beasts

      breathing forth fiery breath,

      Or pouring out roaring smoke,

      or flashing terrible sparks from their eyes.

19  이것들이 끼치는 해악이 저들을 몰살시킬 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라

      경악을 일으키는 그 모습만으로도 저들을 전멸시킬 수 있었습니다.

      Not only could these attack and completely destroy them;

      even their frightful appearance itself could slay.

20  이것들이 아니더라도 저들은 정의에 쫓기고

      당신 권능의 입김에 흩어져

      한 번의 입김만으로도 고꾸라질 수가 있었습니다.

      그러나 당신께서는 모든 것을 재고 헤아리고 달아서 처리하셨습니다.

      Even without these, they could have been killed at a single blast,

      pursued by justice

      and winnowed by your mighty spirit.

      But you have disposed all things by measure and number and weight.
