머리글

FOREWORD

1  율법과 예언서와 그 뒤를 이은 다른 글들을 통하여 위대한 가르침들이 우리에게 많이 전해졌습니다. 그런즉 이스라엘을 그 교훈과 지혜와 관련하여 칭송하는 것은 마땅합니다. 이 글을 읽은 사람들은 스스로 그것들을 이해할 뿐만 아니라,

5  배우기를 즐기며, 말과 글을 통하여 다른 사람들에게도 도움을 줄 수 있어야 합니다. 나의 할아버지 예수께서는 율법과 예언서와 다른 선조들의 글을 읽는 일에 오랫동안 전념하셨습니다. 

10  그리고 이에 관한 충분한 소양을 갖추시고, 교훈과 지혜에 대한 글을 몸소 쓰기로 결심하셨습니다. 그것은 배우기를 즐기는 사람들과 이 글에 친숙해진 사람들이 율법에 따른 생활을 하여 더욱 진보하게 하려는 것이었습니다.

   Inasmuch as many and great truths have been given to us through the Law, the prophets, and the authors who followed them, for which the instruction and wisdom of Israel merit praise, it is the duty of those who read the scriptures not noly to become knowledgeable themselves but also to use their love of learning in speech and in writing to help others less familiar. So my grandfather Jesus, who had long devoted himself to the study of the law, the prophets, and the rest of the books of our ancestors, and had acquired great familiarity with them, was moved to write something himself regarding instruction and wilsdom. He did this so that those who love learning might, by accepting what he had written, make even greater progress in loving according to the Law.

15  그러므로 여러분은 호의를 가지고 이 글을 주의깊게 읽어 주시기를 바랍니다. 그리고 우리가 정성껏 번역하였지만

   You are invited therefore to read it with good will and attention, with indulgence for any failure on our part, despite earnest efforts, in the interpretation of particular passages. For words spoken originally in Hebrew do not have the same effect when they are translated into another language. That is true not only of this book but of the Law itself, the prophecies, and the rest of the books, which differ no little when they are read in the original. 

   에우에르게테스 임금 통치 삼십팔년에 저는 이집트에 가 얼마 동안 머물면서, 적지 않은 교훈이 담긴 이 책의 사본을 발견하고,

30  정성껏 열심히 이 글을 반드시 번역해야겠다고 생각하였습니다. 그래서 저는 그동안 이 책을 완성하여 내놓기까지 잠도 제대로 못 자며 온갖 지식을 다 기울였습니다. 저는 이국땅에 살면서 배우기를 즐기고

35  율법에 맞는 생활 습관을 익히고자 하는 이들을 위하여 이 책을 펴냅니다.

   I arrived in Egypt in the thirty-eighth year of the reign of King Euergetes, and while there, I had access to no little learning. I therefore considered it my duty to devote some diligence and industry to the translation of this book. During this time I applied my skill for many sleepless hours to complete the book and publish it for those living abroad who wish to acquire learning and are disposed to live their lives according to the Law.

제1부 지혜와 금언들

지혜의 신비

1 1 모든 지혜는 주님에게서 오고 영원히 주님과 함께 있다.

        All wisdom is from the Lord

        and remains with him forever.

2  누가 바다의 모래와 빗방울과 영원의 날들을 셀 수 있으랴?

    The sands of the sea, the drops of rain,

    the days of eternity--who can count them?

3  누가 하늘의 높이와 땅의 넓이를, 심연과 지혜를 헤아릴 수 있으랴?

    Heaven's height, earth's extent,

    the abuss and wisdom--who can explore them?

4  지혜는 다른 모든 것에 앞서 창조되었고

    명철한 지각도 영원으로부터 창조되었다.

    Before all other things wisdom was created;

    and prudent understanding, from eternity. 

5  지혜의 근원은 하늘에 계시는 하느님의 말씀이며

    지혜의 길은 영원한 계명이다.

6  지혜의 뿌리가 누구에게 계시되었으며

    지혜의 놀라운 업적을 누가 알았느냐?

    The root of wisdom--to whom has it been revealed?

    her subtleties--who knows them?

7  지혜의 슬기가 누구에게 나타났으며

    지혜의 풍부한 경험을 누가 이해하였느냐?

8  지극히 경외해야 할 지혜로운 이 한 분 계시니

    당신의 옥좌에 앉으신 분이시다.

    There is but one, wise and truly awesome,

    seated upon his throne--the Lord.

9  주님께서는 지혜를 만드시고

    알아보며 헤아리실 뿐 아니라

    그것을 당신의 모든 일에,

    It is he who created her,

    saw her and measured her,

    Poured her forth upon all his works,

10  모든 피조물에게 후한 마음으로 쏟아 부으셨으며

      당신을 사랑하는 이들에게 선물로 주셨다.

      주님의 사랑은 영광스러운 지혜이며

      그분께서는 당신을 보여주실 이들에게 지혜를 베푸시어

      당신을 알아보게 하신다.

      upon every living thing according to his bounty,

      lavished her upon those who love him.

주님을 경외함

Fear of the Lord is Wisdom

11  주님을 경외함은 영광과 자랑이요

      즐거움과 환희의 화관이다.

      The fear of the Lord is glory and exultation,

      gladness and a festive crown.

12  주님을 경외함을 마음을 기쁘게 하고

      즐거움과 기쁨과 장수를 허락한다.

      주님을 경외함은 주님에게서 오는 선물이며

      실제로 그분께서는 사람으로 길을 바로잡아 주신다.

      The fear of the Lord rejoices the heart,

      giving gladness, joy, and long life.

13  주님을 경외하는 이는 끝이 좋고

      죽음의 날에 복을 받으리라.

      Those who fear the Lord will be happy at the end, 

      even on the day of death they will be blessed.

14  지혜의 시작은 주님을 경외함이며

      지혜는 믿는 이들과 함께 모태에서 창조되었다.

      The beginning of wisdom is th fear the Lord;

      she is created with the faithful in the womb.

15  지혜는 사람들 가운데에 영원한 기초를 세우고

      그들의 자손들과 함께 존속하리라.

      With the godly she was created from of old,

      and with their descendants she will keep faith.

16  지혜의 충만은 주님을 경외함이며

      지혜는 제 열매로 사람들을 취하게 한다.

      The fullness of wisdom is to fear the Lord;

      she inebriates them with her fruits.

17  지혜는 그들의 온 집을 보물로 가득 채우고

      제 수확으로 곳간을 채워 준다.

      Their entire house she fills with choice foods, 

      their granaries with her produce. 

18  지혜의 화관은 주님을 경외함이며

      지혜는 평화와 건강을 꽃피운다.

      경외심과 지혜 둘 다 평화를 위해 주어진 하느님의 선물로서

      그분을 사랑하는 이들에게 자랑거리를 더해 준다.

      The crown of wisdom is the fear of the Lord,

      flowering with peace and perfect health. 

19  그분께서는 지혜를 알아보고 헤아리신다.

      지혜는 슬기와 명철한 지식을 비처럼 쏟아 붓고

      자신을 붙드는 이들의 영광을 들어 높인다.

      Knowledge and full understanding she rains down;

      she heightens the glory of those who possess her.  

20  지혜의 뿌리는 주님을 경외함이며

      지혜의 가지는 오래 삶이다.

      The root of wisdom is th fear the Lord;

      her branches are long life. 

21  주님을 경외함은 죄를 멀리하게 하고

      이 경외심이 머무는 곳에서는 모든 분노가 사라진다.

The fear of the Lord drives away sins;

      where it abides it turns back all anger. 

인내와 자제

22  불의한 격분은 정당화할 수 없으리니

      그 격분의 저울추가 그자의 파멸로 기울기 때문이다.

      Unjust anger can never be justified;

      anger pulls  a person to utter ruin.

23  참을성 있는 사람이 때가 오기까지 견디면

      나중에 그가 기쁨을 얻으리라.

      Until the right time, the patient remain calm,

      then cheerfulness comes back to them.

24  때가 오기까지 자신의 말을 삼가면

      수많은 입술이 그의 예지를 이야기하리라.

      Until the right time they hold back their words;

      then the lips of many will tell of their good sense. 

지혜와 바른 행동

25  지혜의 보고 안에는 현명한 격언이 있으나

      죄인에게는 하느님을 섬기는 일이 역겨움이다.

      Among wisdom's treasures is the model for knowledge;

      but godliness is an abomination to the sinner.

26  지혜를 원한다면 계명을 지켜라.

      주님께서 너에게 지혜를 베푸시리라.

      If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments,

      and the Lord will bestow her upon you;

27  정녕 주님을 경외함은 지혜요 교훈이며

      믿음과 온유야말로 주님께서 기뻐하시는 것이다.

      For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and discipline;

      faithfulness and humility are his delight.

28  주님을 경외함에 불신감을 갖지 말고

      두 마음으로 그분께 나아가지 마라.

      Do not disobey the fear of the Lord,

      do not approach it with duplicity of heart.

29  사람들 앞에서 위선을 부리지 말고

      네 입술을 조심하여라.

      Do not be a hypocrite before others;

      over your lips keep watch.

30  너 자신을 들어 높이지 마라. 떨어질까 두렵다.

      네 영혼에게 불명예를 자초하지 마라.

      주님께서 네 비밀을 폭로하시어

      회중 한가운데에서 너를 내던져 버리시리라.

      네가 주님께 경외심을 갖고 나아가지 않았고

      네 마음이 거짓으로 가득하기 때문이다.

      Do not exalt yourself lest you fall

      and bring dishonor upon yourself;

      and cast you down in the midst of the assembly.

      Because you did not approach the fear of the Lord,

      and your heart was full of deceit.
