Difference between Captions and subtitles

Captions and subtitles both show on-screen text for video, but they serve different audiences and purposes.

Captions

• Audience: Designed primarily for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing, or watching with the sound muted (such as on social media).
• Content: Transcribes all audio, including spoken dialogue, speaker changes, music cues, and background sound effects (like [door slams] or [applause]).
• Language: Usually in the same language as the spoken audio.
• Control: Can be closed (toggleable on/off by the viewer via a file like .SRT or .VTT) or open (permanently burned into the video file).

Subtitles

• Audience: Designed for viewers who can hear the audio, but do not understand the spoken language.
• Content: Translates spoken dialogue only; it does not describe background noises, music, or non-speech audio because a hearing viewer already perceives them.
• Language: In a different language than the original audio track.
• Special Variant: SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing) combines subtitle formatting with full caption details (translating dialogue while also noting sound effects).
