제가 그냥 흘려쓴 해설이니 시인의 생각과 다를 수 있습니다.

"You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave!"
원하실 때 언제든 체크아웃하실 수 있습니다.
하지만 절대 떠나실 수는 없을 걸요!

요 노래 맨 마지막 소절과 요 詩 의미가 서로 맞닿아 있습니다.
어느 날 詩人이 '호텔 캘리포니아' 멜로디를 흥얼거리고 있었는데
길바닥 웅덩이에 갇힌 올챙이 한 마리를 보았지요.
야채 행상 리어카 바퀴가 그 웅덩일 첨벙 지나갈 땐
그 올챙이는 하릴없이 혼절昏絕했겠지요.
하지만 그 올챙인 그 웅덩이를 절대로 떠날 수 없습니다.

올챙이는 웅덩이를, 투숙객은 호텔 캘리포니아를

우리는 「배낭길잡이 카페여행」을 떠날 수 없다는 거지요. ㅎ

시인의 남다른 눈길과 상상력에 감탄할 따름입니다.

호텔 캘리포니아
한동안 그 노래에 갇혀 흥얼거렸지
콜리타꽃 향기, 희미한 불빛, 내 머리를 만져주듯
한 여자 문앞에 서 있었고
그 순간 멀리서 종소리도 울려왔고
 
어찌어찌 여기까지 왔는가
대전 역쯤의 플랫폼인 줄 알았는가
호텔 캘리포니아인 줄 알았는가
장마 뒤 길바닥 고인 물에 올챙이
 
햇빛을 총알처럼 되쏘는 그 속을
미친 듯 휘젓고 다니다가
“배추요. 무요. 양파요”
행상의 바퀴가 고인 물 튀기며 지나갈 때
잠시 혼절한 그때
 
찬란한 웅덩이, 잠깐의 호텔 캘리포니아
구름 뒤에 천둥소리 아득하게 떨어지고
어떤 춤은 기억되고 어떤 춤은 잊혀지는
웅덩이 호텔 캘리포니아에서
 
누군가 떨구고 간 너
혼자서 듣고 있지
“어서 오세요. 당신은 이곳의 포로
언제든 떠날 수 있다지만 결코 떠나지 못할걸요”
 
한낮의 허공으로 솟구치는
“배추요, 무우요, 양파요오”
그 소리 잊지 못할걸요
햇빛에 웅덩이 날아가 버리도록

요 曲을 부른 Eagles 숱한 영상 中 가장 좋아하는 것으로 골랐고요,
Eagles 1976년 발표곡이고, 1977년 공연 영상입니다.
(보컬 & 드럼/돈 헨리, guitar/조 월시, 베이스/티머시 슈미트 모두 1947년 生이니 당시 30세 모습.)

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted
She got the Mercedes-Benz, uh
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
"Please bring me my wine"
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here
Since 1969"
And still, those voices are calling
From far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say
"Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis"
Mirrors on the ceiling
The pink champagne on ice
And she said, "We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device"
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
"Relax, " said the night man
"We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave!"

다시 길을 떠날 수 있을 때 비로소 완성됩니다.
