Isiah Thomas came marching into New York four years ago with a big smile and even bigger plans for the Knicks. What he found was a team in disarray and without much of a future.

To many, nothing has really changed during the Thomas regime. Even after Thomas has remade the roster a half-dozen times, the Knicks are still viewed as a team struggling to find its way. Thomas, however, doesn't share that opinion.

"I like the direction we're headed," Thomas said Friday, before his team lost to the Bobcats. "I've said this before: our future is definitely much brighter than it was when I got here four years ago. Cost-wise we're down. Talent-wise we're up. We did a good job of putting people in the seats. I think we're pretty close this year to getting back on track again." [READ]

Kobe Has Thought Of Playing For Sixers

Although Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant has appeared to have a love-hate relationship with his team's ownership for the majority of the last sixth months, the trade-me, don't-trade-me drama appears to have settled down.

But before the former Lower Merion High School star took the court against the Sixers on Friday night, the question had to be asked: Has Bryant ever given thought to playing for the Sixers?

"Sure, sure -- absolutely," Bryant said. "When I was coming out of high school, that's all I thought about doing was playing here."

"Back then the big deal for me was being able to get up in the morning, get up at my parents house, go to shoot-around, come back and do my homework and then go play the game. That was awesome to me. So yeah, I've thought about that."

Although the Sixers will have salary cap flexibility this summer, Bryant most likely won't be on their radar. He can't opt out of his contract with the Lakers until after the 2008-09 season. [READ]

Orlando's Lewis Receives Good News On Injury

Rashard Lewis is still very much in pain, but at least he has a little relief now too.

The Orlando Magic standout forward underwent a magnetic resonance imaging test on his stiff and sore neck Thursday, and much to his delight it showed no structural damage.

"They said there was still some swelling there, but there's no serious injury," Lewis said. "It's relief. I just wanted to know what was going on with my neck before I went out there and hurt myself more. I guess I can relax some knowing that it's OK."

Lewis has been playing in pain for almost two weeks now, and the injury has affected his play on the court. He says he still has trouble turning his head to the right. He's missed just one game even though doctors have told him the neck pain could continue to linger throughout the season if he doesn't get a week's worth of rest to calm down the injury. [READ]

No. 8 UCLA Rallies In 2nd Half, Tops Michigan

Kevin Love had 17 points and 16 rebounds for UCLA while Luc Richard Mbah a Moute added 12 points and 13 rebounds. UCLA finished the game with a 47-29 advantage on the glass.

No. 1 North Carolina Blows Out UC-Santa Barbara

"Our plan all the time is to push the ball, push the tempo, play as fast as we can," Williams said. "If we're going up and down the court so blessed fast, I don't have time to have negative thoughts."

Marcus Ginyard added a career-high 17 points; Wayne Ellington also had 17; and Ty Lawson finished with 15 for the Tar Heels (11-0), who shot 57 percent in continuing their best start since the 1997-98 team won its first 17 games. [READ]

Travis Best Wants To Join Boston

Massachusetts' own Travis Best would love to come home from overseas to help out the Celtics.

The ex-NBA player, now playing in Italy for Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna, said yesterday he would be interested in a backup point guard role for Boston.

Best's comments come a day after ex-Celtic Gary Payton's agent said his client would be interested in the job. The Celtics currently have two roster spots open.

"I'd be happy to contribute to that situation in any way," Best said. "I'd like to help the team win. I'd make the situation better. I've been to the [NBA] Finals. I know what it takes. I know how to contribute in a veteran way." [READ]

Cassell's Name Coming Up In Trade Talks

According to a report in Sports Illustrated, Clippers' guard Sam Cassell's name has popped up several times in regards to players rumored to be traded before the Feb. 21 trade deadline. No specific teams, however, were mentioned.

A prime reason why Cassell is attractive trade bait is because with his experience and ability; he would be a solid addition to a team vying to go deep in the playoffs. Just as importantly, the 38-year old Cassell has an expiring contract.

"I haven't heard anything, but I'd like to be here," Cassell said. "But if something happens, that's just part of this business and I can't cry about it." [READ]

Tension Boils Between Q-Rich, Isiah

Isiah Thomas' quick third-quarter hook of Quentin Richardson led to a wild bench altercation that illustrated the mounting frustration and chaos of Team Titanic II.

Just 1:26 into the second half, Thomas yanked Richardson, who's endured a horrendous season as the starting small forward. Richardson, as he came to the bench, yelled at Thomas, who shot up out of his seat and went after the Knicks' veteran.

Assistant Coach Herb Williams hopped out of his chair to restrain Thomas, who in seconds settled down. Thomas walked over to Richardson's seat, knelt, chatted with him calmly for a few seconds before patting his side. Williams perhaps prevented a fistfight.

Thomas and Richardson both said after the 105-95 loss to the Bobcats that neither harbored ill feelings.

"Just trying to get some fire," Thomas said. "Trying to get some juice flowing through the veins. Sometimes you try to say something to a player and team to get them motivated to get some fire in them. There won't be any carryover to it to what was said." [READ]

Sacramento Owner Arrested

Robert Hernreich, a minority owner of the Sacramento Kings , was arrested Thursday night in Colorado and charged with domestic violence and two counts of criminal trespassing.

Members of the Eagle County Sheriff's office in Edwards, Colorado, responded to a 911 call, which led to Hernreich's arrest, according to a police statement.
Hernreich, 62, was released without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan.14.

Hernreich's attorney Terry O'Connor said his client wasn't involved in a physical altercation.

Hernreich is also an owner of the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League, his lawyer said. [READ]

Marbury Files Grievance Over Fine

A source familiar with the situation believes the Knicks will do the right thing and waive the fine before it goes to a hearing. But Marbury had to file an appeal within 30 days after receiving the fine letter, or he would have waived his rights.

Marbury has missed seven of the last 10 games as he grieves over his father's death. All are excused absences. The one in Phoenix was not, according to the Knicks. However, Marbury has contended Thomas gave him "permission" to leave Phoenix. [READ]
