Gnocchi New Year

Is it too late to wish everyone a happy new year? In Korea, we usually start January 1st by giving respect to our elders, bowing down and wishing them good fortune in the new year: In return, the unmarried youngs get some money to store away for the year. And this is usually followed by a family meal (it would be a late breakfast or early lunch) around the table, eating Tteokguk or rice cake soup. Tteokguk is a traditional new year's meal in Korea, which also signifies a new year that's added to your age (good for kids not so much for us!). But I know it's too cheesy to say "TADA it's new year! so now you guys go get some Tteokguk." This is definitely not like how GOURMET TOUR does, never. So this month's GOURMET TOUR will take you guys to some special places where you can enjoy a special Italian dish that has such a similar taste to Korean Tteokguk's- gnocchi. I think Italian gnocchi can be likened to Korean Tteok, but instead of rice flour and water, gnocchi is made from potatoes and flour. For those who still cannot imagine how it tastes like, let me introduce some delicious gnocchi places in Seoul.

Gnocchi Bar

Gnocchi Bar is a very nice Italian restaurant, newly opened in the heart of Itaewon last year. As the name of this restaurant has already identified itself, they offer such a nice gnocchi whenever I visit this place to grab some authentic Italian dishes, gnocchi in particular. They also have a very nice selection of wines, and a menu that goes well beyond the usual pizza, pasta, or gnnochi choices which are also quite tasty, authentic, and always well prepared. The gnocchi Quattro Formaggi is particularly good and you can feel this as soon as you take one bite. Service here is always very warm and friendly also.

Pasta Freska

I've actually eaten here four of five times and I have to say it's one of the best Italian restaurant in Seoul. Almost every dishe I've tried was good enough but the gnocchi, both the 4-cheese and the tomato sauce, are by far the best thing on the menu and worth going for. Staffs are always excellent and service is pretty flawless. The wine list is quite limited but runs across many price points. Italian wines offered here are never disappointing. I also love its atmosphere which is quite casual but polished.
