형용사에도 능동과 수동의 개념이 있다?

그렇게 보기보다는 해석에서 능동, 또는 수동의 의미가 들어가기 때문이라고 보면 된다.

Favorite : (매우) 마음에 드는, 좋아하는 뜻의 능동의 의미를 가지고

Betty is my favorite movie start.

Favorable : '호의를 보이는'과 같이 수동적 의미를 지닌 경우도 있다.

1)     호의적인, 호의를 보이는, 찬성하는

A favorable impression : 좋은 인상

A favorable comment : 호평

2)     유리한, 형편에 알맞은, 좋은, <무역이> 수출 초과의, suitable and beneficial

A favorable position : 유리한 입장

The terms of the agreement were favorable, so the financial officer signed it

한 부분 또는 조각하면 떠오르는 단어가 segment와 fragment이다. 하지만 두 단어가 지니고 있는 의미는 완전히 다르다. Fragment는 깨지거나 부서진 것을 의미한다.

segment : 무언가의 부분이나 조각, a piece or section of something

1)    부분              the shaded segment of the moon (월식의) 달이 캄캄해진 부분

2)    한쪽[조각]      a segment of a tangerine : 귤 한 조각

3)    (기하) 활꼴     The market segment of woman over 40 is growing.

                   시장의 한 부분, (원형 graph 상의) 한 활꼴

4)    [verb] 나누다 분할하다      The worm has a segmented body

Fragment : 조각으로 부서졌거나 갈라졌음, broken or divided into pieces

1)    조각, 파편              a fragment of rock 바위의 부스러기

2)     [verb] 산산이 부수다[부서지다], 해체되다[하다]

The market is becoming fragmented because of new products and competitors
