Isaiah 19-21

A Prophecy Against Egypt

19

1 A prophecy against Egypt:

See, the Lord rides /on a swift cloud

and is coming /to Egypt.

The idols of Egypt tremble /before him,

and the hearts of the Egyptians melt /with fear.

2 “I will stir up [Egyptian] /against Egyptian— (타동사구 stir up)

brother will fight /against brother,

neighbor () against neighbor,

city () against city,

kingdom () against kingdom.  * () = (will fight)

3 The Egyptians will lose heart,

and I will bring their plans /to nothing;

they will consult [the idols and the spirits of the dead],

the mediums and the spiritists.

* the+형용사=복수명사  the dead = the people who are dead 죽은 자들

4 I will hand [the Egyptians] over

/to the power of a cruel master,

and a fierce king will rule over [them],”

declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

* hand over ; to give another person control of someone or something,  넘겨주다

* rule over (govern), ~을 지배하다, ~을 통치하다

5 The waters of the river will dry up,

and the riverbed will be parched and dry.

6 The canals will stink;

the streams of Egypt will dwindle and dry up.

The reeds and rushes will wither,

7 also the plants along the Nile, at the mouth of the river.

Every sown field along the Nile

will become parched, will blow away and be no more.

8 The fishermen will groan and lament,

[all //who cast hooks /into the Nile];

[those //who throw nets /on the water] will pine away.

*  PINE AWAY is to become thin and weak because of sadness or loss.

9 [Those //who work with combed flax] will despair,

the weavers of fine linen will lose hope.

10 The workers in cloth will be dejected,

and all the wage earners will be sick at heart.  (sick at heart ... very unhappy:)

11 The officials of Zoan are nothing but fools;

the wise counselors of Pharaoh give [senseless advice].

How can you say /to Pharaoh,

“I am one of the wise men,

a disciple of the ancient kings”?

12 Where are your wise men /now?

Let [them] [show you] and make [known] [what the Lord Almighty has planned against Egypt. (도치문)

  한단어인 목보가 긴 목적어/ 명사절  뒤에 쓰면 헛갈릴 수 있기에 어순도치했다 보임

* 비교 ; 21절 So the Lord will make [himself] [known to the Egyptians]에서 어순도치를 하면

13 The officials of Zoan have become fools,

the leaders of Memphis are deceived;

[the cornerstones of her peoples] have led [Egypt] [astray]. (peoples ; 다양한 민족들, people ; 사람들)

* 5 형식 led [Egypt] [astray].  목적이 목보의 상태가 되게 동사하다

14 The Lord has poured /into them [a spirit of dizziness];

they make [Egypt] [stagger in all //that she does],  (5 형식)

as a drunkard staggers around /in his vomit. 

(* Stagger around"means to walk or move unsteadily, as if about to fall.)

15 There is nothing () Egypt can do—  * ()=(that)

head or tail, palm branch or reed.

16 In that day the Egyptians will become weaklings.

They will shudder /with fear /at the uplifted hand //that the Lord Almighty raises /against them.

17 And the land of Judah will bring terror /to the Egyptians;

[everyone to whom Judah is mentioned] will be terrified,

because of what the Lord Almighty is planning /against them.

18 In that day [five cities in Egypt] will speak [the language of Canaan]

and swear allegiance /to the Lord Almighty.

One of them will be called the City of the Sun.[a]

19 In that day there will be an altar /to the Lord /in the heart of Egypt,

and a monument to the Lord /at its border.

20 It will be [a sign and witness] /to the Lord Almighty /in the land of Egypt.

When they cry out /to the Lord /because of their oppressors, he will send [them] [a savior and defender],

and he will rescue them.

21 So the Lord will make [himself] [known to the Egyptians],  (5 형식)

and in that day they will acknowledge the Lord.

They will worship /with sacrifices and grain offerings;

they will make vows /to the Lord and keep them.

22 The Lord will strike [Egypt] /with a plague; he will strike them and heal them.

They will turn /to the Lord, and he will respond /to their pleas and heal them.

23 In that day there will be a highway /from Egypt /to Assyria.

The Assyrians will go /to Egypt and the Egyptians () to Assyria.

The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship /together.

* and the Egyptians (will go) to Assyria.

24 In that day Israel will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing[b] on the earth.

25 The Lord Almighty will bless them, saying,

“Blessed be Egypt my people 백성, Assyria my handiwork 피조물, and Israel my inheritance 상속자.”

A Prophecy Against Egypt and Cush

1 In the year //that [the supreme commander], sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod

and attacked and captured it—

2 at that time the Lord spoke /through Isaiah son of Amoz.

He said to him, “Take off [the sackcloth] /from your body and the sandals from your feet.”

And he did so, going around / stripped and barefoot.

* 동격 명사구 Isaiah = son of Amoz ( Isaiah who is son of Amoz 아모스의 아들인 이사야)

* 분사구 sent by Sargon king of Assyria, going around / stripped and barefoot.

3 Then the Lord said, “Just as my servant Isaiah has gone / stripped and barefoot /for three years,

as a sign and portent against Egypt and Cush,[c]

4 so the king of Assyria will lead away / stripped and barefoot [the Egyptian captives and Cushite exiles],

young and old, with buttocks / bared—to Egypt’s shame.

5 [Those //who trusted in [Cush] and boasted /in Egypt] will be dismayed and put to shame.

6 In that day [the people //who live on this coast] will say, ‘See [what has happened to those () we relied on],

[those () we fled to] /for help and deliverance /from the king of Assyria!

How then can we escape?’”

* TRUST IN is to have a strong belief in the goodness or ability of (someone or something)

A Prophecy Against Babylon

21 A prophecy /against the Desert by the Sea:

Like whirlwinds / sweeping through the southland,

an invader comes from the desert,

from a land of terror.

2 A dire vision has been shown /to me:

The traitor betrays, the looter takes loot.

Elam, attack! Media, lay siege!

I will bring /to an end [all the groaning (that) she caused]. (도치문)

* I will bring [all the groaning (that) she caused] /to an end.

3 At this my body is racked with pain,

pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor;

I am staggered /by what I hear,

I am bewildered /by what I see.

4 My heart falters,

fear makes [me] [tremble]; (5 형식)

[the twilight () I longed for] has become a horror to me.

5 They set the tables,

they spread the rugs,

they eat, they drink!

Get up, you officers,

oil the shields!

6 This is [what the Lord says to me]:

“Go, post [a lookout]

and have [him] [report what he sees].

7 When he sees chariots

with teams of horses,

riders on donkeys

or riders on camels,

let [him] [be alert],  (5 형식)

fully alert.”

8 And the lookout[d] shouted,

“Day after day, my lord, I stand /on the watchtower;

every night I stay at my post.

9 Look, here comes a man in a chariot

with a team of horses.

And he gives back [the answer]:

‘Babylon has fallen, has fallen!

All the images of its gods lie / shattered on the ground!’” (분사구 상태로 동사하다)

10 [My people //who are crushed /on the threshing floor],

I tell [you] [what I have heard] (4 형식)

from the Lord Almighty,

from the God of Israel.

A Prophecy Against Edom

11 A prophecy against Dumah[e]:

Someone calls /to me from Seir,

“Watchman, what is left /of the night?

Watchman, what is left /of the night?”

12 The watchman replies,

“Morning is coming, but also the night.

If you would ask, then ask;

and come back /yet again.”

A Prophecy Against Arabia

13 A prophecy against Arabia:

You caravans of Dedanites,

who camp /in the thickets of Arabia,

14 bring water /for the thirsty;

you //who live /in Tema,

bring food /for the fugitives.

15 They flee /from the sword,

from the drawn sword,

from the bent bow

and from the heat of battle.

16 This is [what the Lord says to me]:

“Within one year, as [a servant / bound by contract] would count it,

all the splendor of Kedar will come /to an end.

17 The survivors of the archers, the warriors of Kedar, will be few.”

The Lord, the God of Israel, has spoken.

Galatians 2:1-16

Paul Accepted by the Apostles

2 Then after fourteen years, I went up /again /to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas.

I took Titus along /also.

2 I went /in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those / esteemed as leaders,

I presented /to them [the gospel //that I preach /among the Gentiles].

I wanted [to be sure () I was not running and had not been running my race in vain].

* meeting privately에서 meeting 은 주어의 준동작,  those esteemed 에서 esteemed 는 those 수식인 형역 과분사

3 Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled /to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.

4 This matter arose /because some false

/believers had infiltrated [our ranks] /to spy on the freedom () we have in Christ Jesus and /to make us slaves.

5 We did not give in /to them /for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved /for you.

6 As for those //who were held /in high esteem

—[whatever they were] makes no difference /to me;

God does not show favoritism—they added nothing /to my message.

7 On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted /with the task of preaching the gospel /to the uncircumcised,[a] just as Peter had been /to the circumcised.[b]

8 For God, who was at work in Peter /as an apostle to the circumcised,

was also at work in me /as an apostle to the Gentiles.

9 James, Cephas[c] and John, those / esteemed as pillars, gave [me and Barnabas] [the right hand of fellowship]

/when they recognized [the grace / given to me].

They agreed that we should go /to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised.

10 [All () they asked] was [that we should continue to remember the poor],

the very thing () I had been eager to do all along.

But when they arrived, he began [to draw back] and separate [himself] from the Gentiles

/because he was afraid of those //who belonged /to the circumcision group.

13 The other Jews joined [him] /in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

14 When I saw that they were not acting /in line with the truth of the gospel,

I said to Cephas in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live /like a Gentile and not like a Jew.

How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

15 “[We //who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles]

16 know that a person is not justified /by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ.

So we, too, have put [our faith] /in Christ Jesus /that we may be justified by faith in[d] Christ

and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him.

1 Deliver me /from my enemies, O God;

be my fortress against those //who are attacking me.

2 Deliver me /from evildoers

and save me /from those //who are after my blood.

3 See [how they lie in wait for me]!

Fierce men conspire against me

for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.

4 I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.

Arise /to help me; look on [my plight]!

*  LOOK ON : 1. to watch something happen but not become involved in it: 

5 You, Lord God Almighty,

[you //who are the God of Israel],

rouse [yourself] /to punish all the nations;

show no mercy /to wicked traitors.[c]

6 They return at evening,

snarling like dogs,

and prowl about [the city]. 동네를 배회하다

*  prowl about ; To move in a stealthy or sneaky manner within a certain area; to creep around.

7 See [what they spew from their mouths]—

the words from their lips are sharp as swords,

and they think, “Who can hear us?”

8 But you laugh at them, Lord;

you scoff at all those nations.

9 You are my strength, I watch for [you];

you, God, are my fortress,

10 my God //on whom I can rely.

God will go /before me

and will let [me] [gloat over those //who slander me].  (5 형식)

11 But do not kill them, Lord our shield,[d]

or my people will forget.

In your might uproot them

and bring them down.

12 For the sins of their mouths,

for the words of their lips,

let [them] [be caught in their pride].  (5 형식)

For the curses and lies () they utter,

13 consume them /in your wrath,

consume them /till they are no more.

Then it will be known /to the ends of the earth

that God rules over [Jacob].  (타동사구 rules over ; govern)

14 They return /at evening,

snarling like dogs,

and prowl about [the city].

* Prowling around means moving quietly and carefully through an area, often trying not to be seen or heard,

like an animal hunting or a person looking for trouble or a target.

15 They wander about /for food

and howl /if () not satisfied.

* and howl /if (they are) not satisfied.

16 But I will sing /of your strength,

in the morning I will sing /of your love;

for you are my fortress,

my refuge in times of trouble.

17 You are my strength, I sing [praise] /to you;

you, God, are my fortress,

my God //on whom I can rely.
