[고별사] 불꽃 같은 신앙으로 정의를 실천하신 요한 형제님을 기리며

오늘 우리는 우리 곁에서 든든한 신앙의 버팀목이 되어주셨던 이철종 요한 형제님을 하느님 나라로 떠나보내는 가슴 아픈 자리에 모였습니다. 저는 오늘 고인의 오랜 벗이자 신앙의 동료로서, 우리 모두의 마음을 담아 형제님께 마지막 인사를 올리고자 이 자리에 섰습니다.
1. 새해의 첫날, 하느님의 부르심에 응답하다
2026년 1월 1일 저녁, 온 세상이 새해의 서광으로 설레던 그 시각에 요한 형제님은 수년간의 고단했던 투병 생활을 마치고 주님의 부르심에 기쁘게 응답하셨습니다. 70대 후반, 육신의 고통이 깊어지는 중에도 형제님은 단 한 번도 주님을 원망하거나 신앙의 끈을 놓지 않으셨습니다. 오히려 그 고통을 십자가의 신비로 받아들이며 묵묵히 견뎌내셨습니다.
우리에게는 너무나 갑작스럽고 슬픈 이별이지만, 요한 형제님께서는 어쩌면 가장 깨끗하고 거룩한 새해의 첫날을 택해 영원한 안식의 땅으로 발걸음을 옮기신 것이라 믿습니다. 이제 더 이상 병마의 고통도, 숨 가쁜 투쟁도 없는 그곳에서 형제님은 평온한 안식을 누리고 계실 것입니다.

2. 공동체를 위한 헌신과 레지오 마리아의 참된 리더
이철종 요한 형제님은 우리 오클랜드 한인성당뿐만 아니라, 토마스 모어(St Thomas More)와 마이랑이 베이(Mairangi Bay) 현지 성당에 이르기까지 당신의 발길이 닿는 곳마다 신앙의 향기를 남기셨습니다.
특히 수년간 레지오 마리아의 단장직을 역임하시며 보여주신 그 열정은 우리 모두의 가슴에 깊이 새겨져 있습니다. 단장으로서 형제님은 단순히 조직을 이끄는 리더가 아니었습니다. 가장 낮은 곳에서 단원들의 손을 잡아주시고, 기도가 필요한 곳이라면 어디든 마다치 않고 달려가셨던 진정한 성모님의 군사였습니다. 형제님의 투철한 책임감과 높은 신심은 우리 공동체가 어려움을 겪을 때마다 중심을 잡아주는 닻과 같았습니다.

3. 정의를 향한 사도직의 완성
우리가 기억하는 요한 형제님은 참으로 강직하고 정의로운 분이셨습니다. 교회 공동체 내에서 어떤 불의나 불합리함을 목격했을 때, 형제님은 침묵하는 편안함 대신 행동하는 고단함을 선택하셨습니다.
신앙 선봉자로서 위와 아래를 잇는 가교 역할을 자처하셨고, 필요할 때는 주교님께 직접 보고를 드리는 용기를 발휘하시면서까지 교회의 바로 선 질서를 위해 애쓰셨습니다. 이는 개인의 명예를 위한 것이 아니라, 오직 주님의 몸인 교회가 거룩하게 보존되기를 바라는 간절한 사도직의 실천이었습니다. 비판을 두려워하지 않고 진리를 수호하려 했던 그분의 대나무 같은 기개는 오늘날 적당히 타협하며 살아가는 우리에게 큰 울림을 줍니다.

4. 언어와 문화를 넘은 화합의 사목
요한 형제님은 또한 넓은 마음을 가진 소통의 대가였습니다. 라파엘 신부님을 비롯한 현지인 사제들과 쌓아오신 돈독한 신분은 우리 한인 교우들이 현지 사회에서 당당하게 신앙생활을 할 수 있는 든든한 밑거름이 되었습니다. 언어의 장벽을 뛰어넘어 오직 '그리스도의 사랑'이라는 공용어로 현지인들과 교감하셨던 형제님의 모습은, 보편적 가톨릭 정신이 무엇인지를 몸소 보여준 아름다운 사례였습니다.

5. 남겨진 가족과 우리들의 다짐
사랑하는 미망인 자매님과 두 따님께 깊은 애도의 마음을 전합니다. 형제님은 밖에서는 강인한 사도였으나, 가정 안에서는 누구보다 따뜻하고 자상한 남편이자 아버지이셨음을 잘 압니다. 가장 큰 슬픔을 겪고 계실 유가족 여러분, 요한 형제님은 이제 육신은 곁에 없으나 신령한 모습으로 여러분의 삶을 지켜주시는 수호천사가 되어 함께하실 것입니다.

사랑하는 요한 형제님,
당신과 함께 미사를 봉헌하고, 공동체를 걱정하며 나누었던 그 뜨거웠던 시간들을 결코 잊지 않겠습니다. 당신이 못다 이룬 정의로운 사도직의 과업은 이제 남겨진 우리들의 몫으로 간직하겠습니다.
성경 말씀에 "나는 훌륭히 싸웠고 달릴 길을 다 달렸으며 믿음을 지켰습니다."(2티모 4,7)라는 구절이 있습니다. 이 말씀이야말로 오늘 하느님 곁으로 돌아가시는 요한 형제님께 가장 어울리는 훈장이 아닐까 생각합니다.
형제님, 고생 많으셨습니다. 이제 주님의 품 안에서 영원한 평화를 누리소서. 훗날 우리 다시 만날 때, 그 인자한 웃음으로 우리를 맞아주소서.

[Farewell Address] In memory of Brother John, who practiced justice with fiery faith.

Today, we have gathered at the heartbreaking moment to bid farewell to Brother Lee Cheol-jong, who has been a reliable pillar of faith by our side, to the Kingdom of God. As a longtime friend and fellow believer of the deceased, I stand here today to offer my final farewell to my brother with all our hearts.
1. On New Year's Day, Respond to God's Call
On the evening of January 1, 2026, when the whole world was filled with excitement as the dawn of the new year, Brother John joyfully responded to the Lord's call after years of arduous battle with illness. In his late 70s, even as his physical suffering deepened, he never once resented the Lord or let go of his faith. Rather, they silently endured the pain, accepting it as the mystery of the cross.
It may be a very sudden and sad farewell for us, but I believe that Brother John has perhaps chosen the cleanest and most holy first day of the new year and stepped into the land of eternal rest. Now, in that place where there is no longer the pain of illness or the hectic struggle, you will be enjoying a peaceful rest.
2. Devotion to the community and the true leader of the Reggio Maria
Brother Lee Cheol-jong has left behind the scent of faith wherever you step, not only at our Auckland Korean Catholic Church but also at the local churches in St Thomas More and Mairangi Bay.
Especially, the passion you demonstrated during your years as the director of the Reggio Maria is deeply etched in the hearts of all of us. As the leader, you were not simply a leader who led the organization. He was the true soldier of the Virgin Mary, holding the hands of the members from the lowest position and rushing to wherever prayer was needed. Your strong sense of responsibility and deep faith were like an anchor that kept our community at the center whenever we faced difficulties.
3. The Completion of the Apostolic Position Towards Justice
The Brother John we remember was truly upright and righteous. When the brother witnessed any injustice or irrationality within the church community, he chose the hardship of action over the comfort of silence.
As a vanguard of faith, he volunteered to act as a bridge connecting the upper and lower levels, and when necessary, he even demonstrated the courage to report directly to the bishop, striving for the upright order of the church. This was not for personal honor but was an earnest practice of apostolic ministry that wished for the sacred preservation of the Church, the body of the Lord. His bamboo-like spirit, which sought to uphold the truth without fear of criticism, resonates deeply with us who live today in a moderate compromise.
4. A ministry of harmony transcending language and culture
Brother John was also a master of communication with a broad mind. The strong social standing built with local priests, including Father Raphael, has become a solid foundation for our Korean believers to confidently practice their faith in the local community. The brother's appearance, who transcended language barriers and communicated with the locals using the common language of "Christ's love," was a beautiful example of what universal Catholic spirit is.
5. The Remaining Family and Our Pledge
I offer my deepest condolences to my beloved widow sister and her two daughters. I know well that my brother was a strong apostle outside, but at home, he was a warmer and more caring husband and father than anyone else. To the bereaved families who are experiencing the greatest sorrow, Brother John will no longer be physically present but will be with you as a guardian angel who protects your lives in a spiritual form.
Beloved Brother John,
I will never forget those passionate times spent celebrating Mass with you and worrying about the community. The task of righteous apostolic ministry that you have not yet accomplished will now be left to us.
The Bible says, "I fought well, ran all the way I could, and kept my faith." (2 Timothy 4:7). I think this is the most fitting medal for Brother John, who is returning to God today.
Brother, you've worked hard. Now, may you enjoy eternal peace in the Lord's embrace. When we meet again in the future, please greet us with that kind smile.
