포트랭리 2019

주말아침 또는 주중에라도 아침 스케줄이 없을때, 또는 아침식사 준비하시기 귀찮을때 혹시 아침드시러 어디로 가세요?

캔과 나는 그럴때 포트랭리로 갑니다. 집에서 5분거리도 채 안되는데다 일단 도착만하면 적어도 다섯개의 아침메뉴중에서 고를 수 있는 여유가 생기기 때문이죠.

보통 배가 그리 고프지 않을 때는 블랙스미스에 갑니다. 거기에 가면 부풀릴대로 부풀린 바삭바삭 세상에서 가장 맛있는 -아니 파리에 이어 두번째가 되겠네요- 햄앤치즈크라상을 맛보실 수 있어요. 풍부한 향과 거품의 커피와 곁들여서요.

저는 작년부터 이 카페를 더욱 좋아하게 되었는데 그 이유는 거기 사이드워크 패티오에서 아침먹다가 가방을 길바닥에 두고온 사건 때문이예요. 그날 저는 집에와서 거라지 문 열고 차에서 내릴때까지 가방 두고온 것도 몰랐어요.  차에서 내릴때 뭐가 허전해서 보니까 들고 갔던 가방이 없지 모예요! 정말 충격적이었죠. 가방을 그냥 인도에 두고 온거니까요. 최대 속력으로 운전해서 카페로 돌아갔어요. 멀리서도 이미 앉았던 자리 바닥에 가방이 없는게 보였고 차에서 내려 주변을 두리번 거릴때 우리 옆에 앉았었던 부부가 저에게 말했어요. 자기가 종업원에게 내 가방을 내가 돌아올때까지 안전하게 맡아달라고 부탁했다는 거예요. 깊은 안도의 한숨을 내쉬고 진심의 감사인사와 아침식사도 계산해드렸어요.

캔과 나는 웃으며 말했죠. ‘아 이것도 또한 포트랭리 문화의 멋진 한 부분이구나!’

포트랭리에는 꽤 멋진 카페들과 함께 특색있는 맛있는 식당들이 즐비하답니다. 직접만든 빵과 디저트에 코트야드도 예쁜 사바카페도 이중에 하나로 바로 블랙스미스 건너편에 있지만 우리는 배가 고플때면 웬들스 북스토어 카페에 갑니다. 거기에 스모크트 베이컨 베니나 와일드머쉬룸과 스피티치 해쉬를 좋아해요. 또 한가지 여기가 좋은 이유는 우리 저먼 셰퍼트 걸, 지나를 데려가기 안성마춤이기 때문이죠. 밖으로 넉넉한 패티오가 있고 얇은 기둥들이 있어서 개를 묶어 놓기도 좋아요. 게다가 여기는 주인을 따라나온 개들을 위해서 물그릇까지 준비되어 있으니까요.

일리엄도 개를 데리고 가기 좋은 카페로 더 넓은 데크와 밴치도 준비되어 있죠. 따뜻한 계절이면 여기는 실내만큼 넓은 바깥 페티오를 완전히 개방해서 온갖 아름다운 꽃들을 엄청난 싸이즈의 화분에 심어 장식해요. 여기서 이 분위기를 감상하며 동시에 개도 눈 앞에 두고 캐어할 수가 있고 종종 투고우 컵에 커피를 마시며 지나와 함께 강가를 걷는 것도 너무 좋아요.

혹시 애그스 베네딕트를 좋아하시는 분이라면 리틀 화이트하우스를 추천드려요. 거기가면 가장 엘레강트한 아침식사를 아늑하고 앤틱스러운 분위기에서 즐기실 수 있어요. 여자친구들 모임이나 하이티로도 유명한데 캔 어머니 생신파티를 여기서 한적이 있었고 저도 제 친구들 여기서 몇번 모였었어요. 다 좋았어요.

저녁식사나 간식으로는 비트닉스 비스트로에 갑니다. 윙이나 코코넛 프런을 그날 그날 기분에 따라 스페셜 드링크랑 아웃도어 패티오에서 함께 하면 아주 딱이예요

아, 맨지아 이 스카파도 있네요. 보기드문 정통 이탈리안 패밀리 레스토랑인데 무슨 스페셜 이벤트날 코스 메뉴를 잘하는데 한번도 우리를 실망시킨 적이 없어요.

다양한 먹거리와 함께 아기자기한 쇼핑도 이 거리에서 느낄수 있는 또하나의 즐거움이죠

생각해보면 포트랭리는 정말로 숨은 보물같아요. 집에서 너무 가까와서 그 가치를 늘 잊고 살지만 말예요

Fort Langley 2019

On weekend mornings or any weekday when you find you don’t have a firm morning schedule and don’t want to make breakfast, where do you go for breakfast?

Ken and I go to Fort Langley on those mornings. For us it’s less than five minutes away from our home.  Within those few short minutes, we can pick from at least five great different breakfast options.

Usually when we are not so hungry, we go to Blacksmith for the most flaky and buttery ham and cheese croissant in the world, no, only second, next to Paris.  It is complimented with great coffee.

I have become to like this café more since last year. Last year we had breakfast at the sidewalk patio and I left my purse behind. It was almost just on the sidewalk. I didn’t realize that I left my purse there until I got home, opening the garage door and got out of my car! I was shocked.

We drove back at the fastest pace and when we got there my purse was gone! As I was looking around the patio seats, the couple who sat next to us told me that they asked the employee to keep my purse safe until I come back! Truly being relieved I thanked them and bought them their breakfast. We smiled saying ‘Hm, this is just part of the great culture of Fort Langley!’

Fort Langley offers many cafés, including nice choices of nice quaint eateries. There is Saba Café with a nice courtyard just across form Blacksmith. But when we are hungrier, we go to Wendel’s bookstore and café. Their smoked bacon benny or wild mushroom and spinach hash are great. This is perfect place to take Zena, our German Shepherd girl because it has patio and poles to leash my dog. Also it features water bowls for the dogs who followed their owners to the café. 

Ielem is also a great dog friendly place with a larger deck and benches outdoors. In warm seasons they open their patio fully decorated with various kinds of flowers in giant pots and I can enjoy the mood keeping an eye on my dog at the same time or I walk along the river with Zena having my coffee in a to go cup.

If eggs benny is your favourite, Little White House serves the best elegant breakfasts in a cozy atmosphere. It is great for a girl friends’ meeting, or a high tea. We had Ken’s mother’s birthday party and some my girl friends’ gathering there. It was enjoyable.

For evening dinners or snacks we go to Beatniks Bistro. We often have wings or coconut prawns with some drinks on the outdoor patio. It’s just perfect.

Then there is Mangia E Scappa, a rare Italian family restaurant that never disappoint us with their course menu for special occasions.

Good food mixed with some nice shopping choices is another fun part of Fort Langley.

Fort Langley is such a treasured place even though I don’t always realize and appreciate because it is so close.
