61 마하깟사빠 장로의 반항적인 제자

부처님께서 제따와나에 계실 때, 마하깟사빠 장로의 반항적인 제자와 관련하여 게송 61번을 설법하셨다.

마하깟사빠 장로가 라자가하 근처의 삡팔리(Pipphali) 동굴에서 두 명의 제자 비구들을 데리고 수행하던 때의 일이었다. 두 제자 가운데 첫째 제자는 스승을 존경하고 부지런하고 믿음 있고 책임을 다하는 성실한 성품이었다. 이에 반해 다른 제자는 게으르고 믿음이 없고 불평이 많으며, 하는 일없이 다른 제자가 해놓은 일을 자기가 한 것처럼 잔꾀나 쓰는 자였다.

예를 들어 부지런한 비구가 스승의 세숫물과 양칫물을 준비해 놓으면 게으른 비구는 재빨리 스승에게 가서 스승의 세숫물과 양칫물이 준비되었다고 자기가 한 것처럼 보고했다. 어느 날 스승은 그의 속임수와 게으름에 대해 꾸중을 했는데, 이 제자는 그것에 대해 다른 비구에게 불평을 늘어놓기도 했다. 또 어떤 날은 스승이 부지런한 비구를 데리고 탁발을 나간 사이 게으른 비구는 스승을 받드는 신자 집을 찾아가서 스승이 지금 병이 들었다고 거짓말을 했다. 신자는 그렇다면 저희가 도울 일이 무엇이냐고 물렀다. 그러자 그는 이러저러한 음식을 준비해 달라고 주문하여 그 음식을 가지고 돌아오다가 중간에서 다 먹어 버렸다.

다음날이 되어 장로가 그 신자의 집을 방문했을 때 신자는 장로에게 어제 제자 비구가 와서 스승이 병이 들었다고 하면서 이러저러한 음식을 받아가지고 갔다고 하며 그 음식을 받으셨냐고 여쭈었다. 이에 장로는 침묵으로 대답을 하지 않고 승원으로 돌아와 제자의 행동을 준엄하게 꾸짖었다. 그런 일이 있는 다음날 장로는 부지런한 제자와 함께 탁발을 나갔는데 혼자 남은 게으른 비구는 거기에 있는 모든 집기들을 다 불태워 버리고 말없이 그곳을 떠나 버렸다.

이 일은 라자가하의 비구들을 통하여 사왓티에 계시는 부처님께 전해졌다.

부처님께서는 말씀하셨다.

“마하깟사빠가 제자를 두지 않고 혼자 수행했더라면 그런 사건은 나지 않았을 것이니라. 깟사빠가 그 같은 고통을 겪은 것은 그런 어리석은 자와 함께 있었기 때문이니라.”

부처님께서는 게송을 읊으셨다.

자신보다 낫거나 비슷한 도반을

만나지 못 한다면

차라리 홀로 수행하라.

어리석은 자를 도반으로 삼지 말라.

부처님의 이 설법 끝에 라자가하에서 온 비구들은 수다원이 되었다.

Carance nadhigaccheyya

seyyam sadisamattano

ekacariyaram dalham kayira

natthi bale sahayata.

Verse 61: If a person seeking a companion cannot find one who is better than or equal to him, let him resolutely go on alone; there can be no companionship with a fool.

The Story of a Resident Pupil of Thera(Elder Monk) Mahakassapa

While residing at the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha uttered Verse (61) of this book, with reference to a resident pupil of Thera Mahakassapa.

When Thera Mahakassapa was residing near Rajagaha, he had two young bhikkhus staying with him. One of them was respectful, obedient and dutiful to the thera, but the other one was not. When the old thera chided the latter for his slackness in his duties, he was very much offended. On one occasion, he went to the house of a lay-disciple of the thera, and lied to them that the thera was ill. Thus, he got some choice food from them for the thera; but he ate the food on the way. When admonished by the thera for this he was extremely angry. The next day, when the thera was out on his alms-round, the young foolish bhikkhu stayed behind, broke the pots and pans and set fire to the monastery.

When a bhikkhu from Rajagaha told the Buddha about this, the Buddha said that it would have been much better for Thera Mahakassapa to live alone than to live with a foolish companion.

Then the Buddha spoke in verse as follows:

Verse 61: If a person seeking a companion cannot find one who is better than or equal to him, let him resolutely go on alone; there can be no companionship with a fool.

At the end of the discourse, the bhikkhu(Monk) from Rajagaha attained Sotapatti Fruition.
